It may well be that he was born in Frithsden but as his earliest memory was of living in Great Gaddesden that is what he gave as his place of birth.

Looking at the image for 1851 I would say the surname is Rance mistranscribed as Rassel.

As an aside I can't find a Frithsden, or anything similar, on 'Parish Locator'...Maybe someone with local knowledge will know better.

I've checked 1841 census and David is married to Sophia on that one too.
