Just a bit more, from 1891:

Mother's Name: Ellen
Where born: Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire

Occupation: Riveter

Name: Kenny McLauchlin

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1885
Relationship: Gd Son
Where born: Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Address: 7 Customhouse Lan

ED: 7
Page: 13
Household schedule number: 67
Line: 2
Roll: CSSCT1891_194
Household Members:
Name Age
Edward McLauchlin 29
Ellen McLauchlin 60
Kenny McLauchlin 6

I'd tried Ellen a bit, as a common variant, but got nowhere.

Still no luck before 1881 with Ellen.

In 1861 there are a John McLachlan, riveter, and a Daniel McLaghlan, shipbuilder labourer, address Customhouse Lane Peddies Land, both born in Ireland, neither with families. In 1871 I can't get any results searching for address:customhouse. And searching by occupation:riveter/rivetter finds a household with an Ellen McLaughlin in Port Glasgow, but she was born in 1845 and married to a James.

I'm concluding that they just weren't there, and the kids really were born in Ireland!

But my my my, what have we here? In the IGI:

PATRICK MCLAUGHLAN
Birth: 14 MAR 1856 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Father: EDWARD MCLAUGHLAN
Mother: HELEN HAGGERTY

My my my indeed. Now that's gotta be him, do you think?

In the same batch, C115741, we have:

HELEN MCLAUGHLIN
Birth: 04 MAY 1866 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Father: EDWARD MCLAUGHLIN
Mother: HELEN HAGGERTY

JOHN MCLAUGHLIN
Birth: 24 OCT 1862 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Father: EDWARD MCLAUGHLIN
Mother: HELEN HAGGERTY

PHILIP MCLAUGHLIN
Birth: 23 OCT 1862 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Father: EDWARD MCLAUGHLIN
Mother: HELEN HAGGERTY

THOMAS MCLAUGHLIN
Birth: 24 OCT 1862 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Father: EDWARD MCLAUGHLIN
Mother: HELEN HAGGERTY

WILLIAM MCLAUGHLIN
Birth: 23 FEB 1859 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Father: EDWARD MCLAUGHLIN
Mother: HELEN HAGGERTY

WILLIAM MCLAUGHLIN
Birth: 20 JAN 1864 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Father: EDWARD MCLAUGHLIN
Mother: HELEN HAGGERTY

Now, three children born on essentially the same date in 1862 doesn't make a lot of sense -- athough triplets who didn't survive is a possibility. But the younger William and the Helen there certainly match up with the children in the 1881 household.

Aha, and son Edward shows up when I search that batch by Helen's name as mother:

EDWARD MCLAUGHLEN
Birth: 04 NOV 1860 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Father: EDWARD MCLAUGHLEN

So -- surely this means that they were there in the 1861 census.

But no ... just not to be found for love nor money.

And about all we've accomplished for your Helen Haggerty is to find out that her husband's name was actually Edward, and she was born in Ireland!

Hi Sue, daughter of Ruth. ;) Got your message, just going to reply here so the info is all visible at once.

"the only details I have on Helen Haggerty and Adam McLaughlan is from their son's marriage certificate from 1880 their address, from 1880. 7 Customhouse Lane, Port Glasgow ,Renfrew. Adam was deceased in 1880 their son was born 1858 his name was Patrick, so I thought they could of been born around 1820 up."

Searching at Ancestry for

patrick mcla* macla*

(to catch all possible spelling variants or mistranscriptions)

with parents Helen and Adam ... I see nobody at all in 1861 or 1871 who matches him.

There's a Patrick McLachlan born abt 1859 in Port Glasgow, living in Port Glasgow in 1861 -- with parents James and Lucy.

Looking in those years for any mcla* macla* born 1848-1868 with parents Helen and Adam ... none.

Looking for an Adam mcla* macla* born 1820-1840 with wife Helen ... none.

No one resembling either Adam or Helen in their unmarried state, either.

You know what I'd suspect, given the surnames and the Patrick? That they were from Ireland -- many if not most of the people named McLaughlan and variants in Scotland in the censuses were born in Ireland.

You haven't given Patrick's wife's name, which is important for finding him in the 1881 census, and getting whatever personal details are there for him. Was it Julia? If so, this would be him:

Name: Patrick McLaughlin
Age: 21
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1860
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Julia
Gender: Male
Where born: Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Registration Number: 564/2
Registration district: Greenock East
Civil Parish: Greenock East
County: Renfrewshire
Address: 7 Ardgowan St
Occupation: Ship Rivetter
ED: 29
Page: 10
Household schedule number: 46
Line: 18
Roll: cssct1881_165
Household Members:
Name Age
Julia McLaughlin 21
Patrick McLaughlin 21

In 1881, there are three Helens, with various spellings of the surname, in Port Glasgow, Greenock Middle and Greenock West, born 1833 to 1841, who could conceivably be his mother. All were heads of household, and all had another child or children younger than Patrick.

I also searched for Patrick pre-1871 by firing as widely as possible -- any Pat* born 1856-1860 in Renfrewshire with mother Helen. And there's just nobody who looks like.

Even just searching for any pat* born 1856-1860 turns up nobody in 1871 who looks like him.

I wonder whether he wasn't actually born in Ireland, too.

Scotlandspeople doesn't show any marriages after 1855 for Adam McLaughlan and Helen Haggerty (of course they could have married earlier).

It offers several possibilities for a Patrick McLaughlan birth in the timeframe -- but I don't have any credits, so I can't check 'em. If you haven't tried there, you might give it a go:

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You have to register, pay for credits, etc., but it isn't too expensive.

What you didn't say was how you know Helen Haggerty's name to start with.

I'm no whiz at Scottish things, and absolutely no use at all for Irish things. (I'm in Canada, and just a whiz with search engines like Ancestry's.) So I'm probably not going to be much use to you! Wish I could have helped more.

Oh, stop the presses -- you had an address in 1880, so I went back and checked those Helens in 1881, and here she is:

Name: Helen McLachlan
Age: 48
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833
Relationship: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Ireland
Registration Number: 574
Registration district: Port Glasgow
Civil Parish: Port Glasgow
County: Renfrewshire
Address: 7 Customhouse Lane
Occupation: Formerly Mill Worker
ED: 8
Page: 12
Household schedule number: 70

Roll: cssct1881_176
Household Members:
Name Age
Edward McLachlan 19
Helen McLachlan 48
Helen McLachlan 14
Wm McLachlan 17

The images can't be viewed at Ancestry, but she's evidently a widow with three children younger than Patrick:

Name: Edward McLachlan
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relationship: Son
Mother's Name: Helen
Where born: Pt Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Address: 7 Customhouse Lane
Occupation: Apprentice Rivetter

Name: Wm McLachlan
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1864
Relationship: Son
Mother's Name: Helen
Where born: Pt Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Address: 7 Customhouse Lane
Occupation: Rivet Heater

Name: Helen McLachlan
Age: 14
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1867
Relationship: Daughter
Mother's Name: Helen
Where born: Pt Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Address: 7 Customhouse Lane
Occupation: Mill Worker

Note that the boys' occupation is the same as the Patrick I guessed was yours in 1881. And Helen was born in Ireland.

Now ... did you know all this already??

Still just absolutely cannot find them in 1871 though.

Hi Ruth -- do you have any idea at all about that ?? in your 18?? ?

What year they married, for instance, what year Adam was born if you know.

Accounting for spelling variations that one might expect, there are probably a couple of dozen Helen Hag*rty-s in the censuses.

Same spelling variation (or mistranscription) problem with McLaughlan, of course. But if you have some general idea of their ages and/or when they married, it could help to find them.
