forgot to say, when i found silas birth certificate i just went backward over the years(it took a while!)from that point looking for a margaret craven and john hatton marriage, this is the only one i could find that fit.
oh,and Johns profession is given as 'Carter',in 1879.
oh,and one more thing, sorry, when silas married amelia the address is 38 Crampton road penge, and both John and Silas are labourers.
Thats all,i promise this time, thanks for the valuable help.Alan.

i've been over there and registered,ok.My user name is "alanjohn".just waiting on my approval email.
Margaret Craven is not really a problem she pops up on a couple of census,as does her parents.
His name is definately Silas, all the esses on the certificate look the same,as for the address ill get my scanner working,so you can see it somehow, but a few people home here have looked and it starts with Ba*,Hulme.
On Johns marriage certificate his father is there and his profession is given as "sea captain",margarets father is Thomas he's a joiner.
On the top of the marriage certificate it gives the usual "marriage solemnized at",i think it reads,"cath parish church"(but thats a definate maybe),as i said the writtings not great.
One more point would Silas be a shortened version of Samuel?Hmm.
could John have called his son after his father?Any ideas?

Alan, sorry this one had slipped my mind. I put a thread on another forum and they have been busy and have some suggestions. Could you nip over there and see what you think and add any more info: use this addy for a link:

The handwriting isnt brilliant on either certificate, but,
on Silas i think it reads,
"22 Basster,or Baseter street,Hulme, and on John's marriage certificate it gives his address as Trafford street,Manchester.
I have my fathers birth certificate as well, which gives Silas address at that time(1914) as 21 Grays inn Place,Pimlico.

What was the full address given on the birth certificate?

Its a real mystery. With your permission, Ill ask a few other people on another forum.

On his marriage certificate silas is down as a labourer,as is his father John(and John is not mentioned as deceased)I have his birth certificate, which lists his father as John, and his mother as Margaret Craven.
I then have the marriage certificate for John and Margaret, which lists Johns father as Samuel.Johns age is given as 28 on December 25th 1871 when they married in Manchester. In the 1851 census he should show up as a 7 or 8 year old,but i cannot find a John or Samuel listed together in any census.
Its quite frustrating!Silas isnt even a common name.
It wouldn't be bad if i'd found john in any of the 1851,61,or 71,census.He didnt get married till the end of 1871 he should show up somewhere i'd think, any thoughts?

Is this his birth ref? Have you got the certificate which would give mums full name plus dads name and occupation?

Name: Silas Hatton
Year of Registration: 1879
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Chorlton
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 861

The only Silas I can find was born 6 years earlier in Wales. Shame its not him, theres some lovely pension details for him. I wonder if dad died and mum remarried and Silas is stuck under the step fathers surname? I think you need to spend £7 on buying that birth cert to see who mum was and also what dads occupation was, which may shed some light.

So do you have his marriage cert - you know his fathers name? How do you know his grandfathers name too if you havent been able to find him in any census?

My grandfather was silas hatton born nov 1878 in hulme, died nov 1941 in lewisham hospital, the birth was registered in 1879.This is all i can find,he doesnt show in the census for 1881,1891,or 1901,but i know he married in 1902 to amelia sparks in penge, surrey.
As you can imagine this is pretty frustrating so if anyone has any ideas to track him i'd be very grateful.
If it helps his father was John and his Grandfather was Samuel(Samuel was a sea captain and he seems to be just as elusive!!),both of them came from the manchester, lancaster area and thats all the info i have i'm afraid.
