have arthur smith in 1901 census living with clement and annie and their son george aged 1 plus a lucy humphrey aged 12 and yes it does say storrington it makes it confusing for us resurching them when they do this with places.

Rose Ellen Smith died in 1894 quarter Jan-Mar.

Smith Rose Ellen 53 Thakeham 2b 245.

Arthur Smith is probably the Bricklayers Lab on the 1901 census and listed as living in Storrington.

It is not unusual for people born in Rackham to say they were born in Amberley. In the past people would say they were born in Rackham-in-Amberley.

There are several Arthur Smith's on 1901 and no sign of Rose. Cannot now get into FreeBMD as it's playing up.

This is a longshot - at the top of the census page in 1881 is a John West - farmer of 17 acres.

Rose Smith and her seven children live two doors away. Is it possible that John West is Arthur's father?

in the 1881 census arthur john west is 18 months old his mum is rose ellen (hedger birth name) born 1839 in rackham sussex. i know rose married a william smith b1836 in rackham sussex and i beleive he died about 1875 but been unable to find exact date. i have looked on the 1901 census sight for birth records of arthur john west from 1878 to 1881 but cant find a match so are stuck. if any one can find a record of arthurs birth or the second marriage of rose ellen to a mr west i would be very pleased. would love to move forward with this been going around in circles tried other various sights for reference and cant find anything many thanks lorraine
