Reggie,

I know about the earlier work because i helped find it all.

I just read between the lines of what Debbie was posting re the mother.

She did in fact say in answer to a couple of the postings on here that she already had that information!

sorry Debbie!!!

But I really do think that the 1891 Census is wrong, although I am not sure how come all the children are on there when William wasn't born until 1893!!!!

Debbie Report 11 Nov 2007 21:29

Lost for Words ;-) Report 11 Nov 2007 21:29

I've just had a look at Cornelius ages

1861 - 20

1880 - 33 (marriage)
1881 - 34
1891 - 41
1901 - 60

So perhaps counting wasn't their forte!! Or perhaps it was because he was much older than Sarah and they didn't want people to talk!!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Nov 2007 21:33

Bu that still doesn't explain the children's ages which stay static or they become younger

and William H apparently wasn't born until 1893.

It's a muddle!!!

looking at the 1891 closer correct me if im wrong it says Cornelius born abt 1850 - should be abt 1840 so that makes him ten years younger than he really is

The address is the same in both 1891 and 1901

58 Chesham Street, Leamington or Leamington Priors.

Hi Debbie,

That's right ............. he gains 20 years between the 1891 and 1901 Censuses.

Not only that, on the 1891 he says he was born in Lemaington, Warwickshire instead of Northamptonshire ... so even got confusion there!!

I think the elder one could be Margery not Mary Ann.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Nov 2007 21:50

Correct!!

There's a Mary Ann and a Mary E

Or is the bottom one May E although I can't explain the 10 year age difference. If they'd been older perhaps but how do you mistake a 3 year old for 14

lfw the '91 appears to be aroound 10 years out of range for some reason , trying to search the children without the ebd

Debbie

I think Sylvia is right about the ages being wrong and Sarah is the mother. The bit I don't get is why!!! Dad is younger and the kids are all about 10 years older in 91 than they should be. A couple of years out you could understand but 10! the only conclusion I can draw is they either had a speech impediment or there was money to be had ;-)

Order one of the certificates and please let us know the outcome. :-)

Debbie,

I really can't explain the discrepancy.

There don't seem to be two Cornelius' each married to a Sarah.

There is only one Sydney C Makepeace, and he was born 1883, which fits with his age on the 1901, and fits with Sarah being his mother. And there is only one Daisy N Makepeace, and again her birthdate fits with the 1901 Census.

It is one of those peculiarities of searching ancestors and you may never really sort it out. You may just have to accept that the Cornelius Makepeaces' gave some wrong information to the Census Taker in 1891.

It is not unusual to find wrong ages, especially if there are several children .... but 10 years out is a little much!!!

I myself would be tempted to get one of the children's birth certificates to prove their parentage.
