Hi Brenda,
That's my family all right-the childrens' names are correct -also the wifeThank you again.Looks like I may have got the shoemaker occupation wrong. The wife was a Jane Gallon .she had the first son William Russell for someone else in 1860-she and the boy are with her parentsWilliam Gallon and Janet Garrow at Croy farm ,Pluscarden in 1861.No sign of Alexander Elder thereabouts in 1861?

Thanks ,Brenda-you are probably correct with William as there is a Nicol in the same house and william's mother was an Isabella Nicol. The George Nicol age 50 may be her brother.

Hi Brenda-many thanks for the look-up.I'm very pleased to get the new information. Please,if you have time can you also try for the son Alexander Elder, born 1838 in Drainie and a shoemaker.he lived in a house called Crossley,Pluscarden,Elgin parish ,moray after his marriage in 1863 so may have been in that parish in 1861.He was a shoemaker.

Hi,
I'd be grateful if anyone could locate these people in the above census please.
In 1841 and 1851 the Elder family -minus the husband Alexander-are in Stotfield,Drainie parish,Morayshire.
1841-mother Isabella Elder (nee Nicol-born Wick,Caithness) age 21(not likely to be accurate as Alex Elder and Isabella Nicol were married in Wick in 1835)
son John Elder 3,Alexander 2,Isabella 3 months.
1851-Isabella Elder age 38 born Wick,Caithness-mason's wife.
son John 14 born Wick
daughter Isabella 10 born Drainie,Morayshire
daughter Margaret 7 born Drainie
son William 5 born Drainie
In 1851 their son Alexander is working as a stable boy (age 12 born Drainie) in Duffus parish,Morayshire.
I looked for the father,Alexander Elder,a mason, in 1841 and found one possible-in Bishop Street ,Barony,Glasgow,Lanarkshire there are two Alex Elders as boarders-one age 40 one 20-both are masons so possibly father and son. Can't get their place of birth except it is outside the census county.
So,can someone please check for any or all of them in the 1861 census and also for the father Alexander Elder in the 1851 census since he is away from home in that census too.The son Alexander who was the stable boy in 1851 was still single until 1863 and he was a shoemaker at the time of his marriage.
Many thanks for any possible help,
Joan.
