Yep that's what I had for him, it all fits in with my dad's story of how they met! |

If this is Charles in 1901, he is a flower seller. Would fit your scenario1901 England Census |

This could be Alice in 1901. Father Charles described as a POTMAN (working in a pub?) |

The most likely reason you can't find her living with her Dad is that she would have been working for some years by 1901 (aren't you glad you were born a bit later?) and the most common job for an uneducated girl was domestic servant. I expect you have seen the following which does not seem a very good fit. There are a lot of Alice M Wood's in service and if I were you I would go through each of them looking for a clue. |

I've been looking for her for ages but I've only got as far as he marriage...but only because I knew her husbands name! She's my great-grandmother and this is driving me mad! Her marriage certificate says she was 21 in 1905 (but someone found from find my past that she was born in 1887 - I think), it also says her father was Charles Wood (and it doesn't say he's deceased) who was apparently a market gardener. However, there is no Alice Matilda with father Charles on the 1901 census!! Her husband was from Croydon, where they got married but they met in Convent Garden. I think she was a Londener as my dad said he remembers her having the accent! But, the thought occurred to me today, that she might have been illegitimate and therefore I wouldn't find her with a father Charles in 1901...now I just don't know where to go!! I can't find a birth for an Alice Matilda WOOD and the whole thing has just confused me!!!!!!! |
