Thanks!

Just realised aswell...was looking at Charles' census and realised it is the same road as he has for his address on his marriage cert.. is 26 Wilford Road in 1901 but 48 on his marriage cert.

Alica also has an address! 34 Foster Road, Croydon....

Obviously she may not have been there 4 year before...but if someone could check the address in 1901 (if that's possible?) it would be great!

Thanks everyone for your help!!!

I haven't seen that one before Brenda! This working away thing looks promising...if only someone someone had suggested earlier! Thanks!

I did just remember something my dad has mentioned somewhere along the line about her being in the work house...whether that means that was when she married Charles or when she was younger I don't know!

Thanks.

Hi

Charles Buckfield was the groom.

And she doesn't have a job on her marriage certificate but then again this is four years later than the 1901 census.

I never thought about her working away lol...didn't click...but either way...she seems to be non-existant in the birth records! :S Whether she really was 21 when she got married or not....seriously..she confuses me :D

Thanks,
Clare

The most likely reason you can't find her living with her Dad is that she would have been working for some years by 1901 (aren't you glad you were born a bit later?) and the most common job for an uneducated girl was domestic servant. I expect you have seen the following which does not seem a very good fit. There are a lot of Alice M Wood's in service and if I were you I would go through each of them looking for a clue.

Clare Report 12 Nov 2007 20:08

I've been looking for her for ages but I've only got as far as he marriage...but only because I knew her husbands name! She's my great-grandmother and this is driving me mad! Her marriage certificate says she was 21 in 1905 (but someone found from find my past that she was born in 1887 - I think), it also says her father was Charles Wood (and it doesn't say he's deceased) who was apparently a market gardener. However, there is no Alice Matilda with father Charles on the 1901 census!! Her husband was from Croydon, where they got married but they met in Convent Garden. I think she was a Londener as my dad said he remembers her having the accent! But, the thought occurred to me today, that she might have been illegitimate and therefore I wouldn't find her with a father Charles in 1901...now I just don't know where to go!! I can't find a birth for an Alice Matilda WOOD and the whole thing has just confused me!!!!!!!

Any suggestions?!

Thank you!!

Clare
