Hello Betty,

I have checked and the service number you have for him is correct. He was a member of the 6th Bn Connaught Rangers and died on 9th March 1917 and is buried at the Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery

Hi Jolly,

Yes Patrick Collins died in No Mans land in WW1 and mother received his DCM.

You are correct he was in the army from the age of 17 or so up to 1917 when he died..

After a certain date (which I can't remember) the numbers were shared out by regiment.

There's a great book that you can pick up from the library about researching your army ancestors - and that explains how the numbering system works.

Anyone know how someone would have an army service number of just 5332 when all the others are longer.?
