Is the only way to find parents names, by buying a birth certificate (costing me a fortune so far)

I am trying to confirm the parents names of George Godfrey born in Leeds on 16th July 1884 & possibly died at birth.

Any help appreciated

As he won't appear on a census, the cert is probably the only answer.........unless there was a baptism

Thanks Lost for Words, I have printed the post for future use.

Reggie, thanks for your reply. I suspected it would have to be another certificate to buy.
