go to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

put the name of the seaman in the top box "word or phrase" in this form Surname Initial IE Powell D
then in the lowest box "Department or series code"
write BT 372
You'll get a list of all seamen with the surname and place of birth. The date attached to the record is the d.o.b. of the seaman not the registration date. From there you can order the docs for 6pounds 50 for 5 jpegs. They come to your email address within a couple of hours if you order before 13.00

Glenys, thanks very much for that, very useful.
My Robert Armstrong R612303 doesn't seem to be there. I will check with my uncle to see if he has made a mistake with his discharge number.
