Trying to find the Finlay Elliotts possibly moved

My husband's family name is Elliott and for the last four generations the eldest son's middle name has been Finlay derived from Eliza Finlay (b. 1856 in Ballarat Victoria Australia) who married Edwin Elliott (b. 1852 in Maryborough Victoria Australia). I am hoping to pick up the link to England as I think their parents may have come over to Australia for the goldrush? I am finding this quite difficult as my husband's grandfather deserted the family during the depression period sometime in the 1920's and most of this Elliott family history has been lost.
