I want to obtain the qualifications of a distant uncle but first need to know his registration number whick I believe will be available at Kew.
Name: James Percival Henderson, born March 1846 In Bishop Wearmouth, Sunderland.. He probably qualified at North Sheilds inthe early 1870s.

Are you saying he was in the Merchant or Royal Navy?

If so www.tna.co.uk, then on the left for the relevant service

The late 1800's is not a good period to find merchant seamen unless you have the name of any of the ships that they served on. They abandoned central records from 1857 to about 1913.
If he was an engineer he may be in BT 139 or BT 142, both are indexed by BT 139.
If you have not found any information yet, I will be going to Kew on Tuesday 27th and could try to have a quick look.
