Hi Judith -- I never know, am I talking to the same Judith as in another conversation? We must all start using initials, at least!

If you go to http://freebmd.org.uk, click on the red "search", and search for

marriages
surname: russell
given name: william
spouse's surname: cripps
dates: 1895 to 1915 (for good measure)

... oops, you'll find that there wasn't one. Let's try just russell and cripps, no given name ...

Before 1911, FreeBMD won't tell you who married whom, because that info isn't in the index. But it will tell you whether two names (given name or surname or both or combination, doesn't matter) appear on the same page, among what is usually four names in total.

Sometimes, say if you search for a ___Smith who married a James___, you'll find that it's John Smith and James Brown, so you know that isn't your couple. ;)

But if you know your Mr. Smith married someone named Jane, you may be able to find the right pair.

Okay, so for that search, we have

Charles Cripps and John Russell. Nope.
Sidney Russell and Florence Cripps.
Cecil Russell and Eliza Cripps.
Lily Russell and Herbert Cripps.
Frederick Russell and Flora Cripps.

Looks like not.

You can repeat it, searching just for Emily Cripps, William Russell, etc., to see whether there might have been some mistranscription of a name or the like. There are a couple of dozen Emily Cripps-s in that time period, e.g.

The Fossett-Russell marriage is there in 1895, or at least those two people are among the four on the same page.

btw, if you're interested in children, you can search there too; births after mid-1911 show mother's surname.

births
surname: Russell
mother's surname: Cripps

There are 6, 3 in 1912 and 3 in 1914, so obviously at least three different families! There seem to be a pair in West Ham, a pair in Brentford, plus one in Henley and one in Bradfield.

Heh -- good theory, Gwyneth ... except ... that Harris-Russell marriage, in 1893, is *before* the first Russell marriage, to Fossett, in 1895.

;)

Still a good theory though, so how about

Marriages Mar 1905
BATES Alfred Islington 1b 240
COXALL Daisy Islington 1b 240
MARTIN Emily Islington 1b 240
Russell William Islington 1b 240

-- searching just for William Russell married Emily, and looking at likely locations in the results.

No Cripps-Martin marriage to match back to 1880, though.

Methinks there was at least one pre-existing marriage that was still existing when William and Emily hooked up.

Don't know whether Judith is with us at all ...

Hello Kathryn B and Gwyneth Kent, Happy New Year .Thank you for taking an interest in my posting. I am back again and will take on board all your suggestions and follow them up. The Martin connection rings some bells, maybe explaining some of the previously 'unexplained' Will go to it right now. Thanks so much. Sorry to have been absent and unresponsive.
I will now identify myself as Judith/Suffolk
