Hi Jean!

If you go to

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

you can search for relevant marriages and births, up to the point where FreeBMD has transcribed them, quickly and for no charge.

I don't know my English geography well enough to be sure whether this would be the right place, but might this be a daughter?

Name: Hilda Smith
Year of Registration: 1917
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Mother's Maiden Name: Payton
District: Bradford
County: Yorkshire - West Riding, West Yorkshire
Volume: 9b
Page: 154

Just search for

births
surname payton
mother's surname smith
anywhere
anytime

(mother's surname was only recorded after mid-1911)

Sarah's first marriage:

Name: Sarah Smith + John W Payton
Year of Registration: 1915
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Aston
County: Warwickshire
Volume: 6d
Page: 1006

You'll need to wait a bit for FreeBMD to catch up with the transcriptions beyond where it is so far, to find Sarah's second marriage and more chidren -- or talk to Lindsay, who finds things that aren't at FreeBMD. ;) (Ancestry uses FreeBMD's database, and is usually a little behind them, and that's the only place I have a paid subscription.)

Or you could pay for access, e.g. at Ancestry (or take out the 14-day free trial subscription), and hunt through the images of pages of the GRO index -- one page for Rhodes for each quarter of each year -- looking for Rhodes births with mother's surname Smith (presumably not Payton).

Not knowing when Sarah married Rhodes (I've checked under both Smith and Payton), I can't tell when her kids would have been born. But if you search at FreeBMD now for Rhodes births with mother's surname Smith, after 1917, you'll find several from 1917 to 1921 (beyond that, not yet transcribed). You might be able to tell, from the name and/or location, whether any are Sarah's children.

That at least would give you some names to be getting on with!

Hello all , I am trying to find any relatives of my grandmother.
her name was Sarah Smith born around 1891. She died in 1963 in Birmingham . She was married twice once to John William Payton in 1915 and once again to Freddie Rhodes .
The problem is that she was from a barge family and so it is near impossible to find her family .
I remember her taking me to Bedworth with her to visit her sisters .. but as I was only 7 my memory is very vague.
Her Brother was called Soloman and he drowned at a young age when he fell of the barge into the lock as it was filling uo .
I wonder if anyone out there has a match for this lady ? As she has quite an interesting past .
Yours gratefully Mrs Jean Grahame
