Hi David,
"hob" apparently means "herd" in Danish, so maybe Hobman means "herdsman". As the Danes had a great influence on our language, this seems to me to be a better bet than that of "Hob" being short for Robert, as in Hobson and Hobbs.
Hope this makes sense.

Hi,

I am trying to find the origin of the surname Hobman. I understand that the "man" could mean "son of" with "Hob" being a medieval shortening of "Robert" but I really do not know if this is the case. Is it an Old English name or does it originate from elsewhere?

If anyone can shed any light on the meaning of the surname and the historical origins of the surname, I would be very grateful indeed!

I thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer me.

Kind regards
David
