Clare Report 22 Nov 2007 12:37

I still haven't got anywhere with my great-grandmother's family (Alice Matilda Wood)...however, on her marriage certificate (to Charles Henry Buckfield) of January 1905, there are two women as witnesses: Sarah Hunt and Annie Field. So, I was wondering if it was likely they were her relations or she had known them previously (unless they were linked to her husband of course) but I don't know how to go about finding this out.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Clare

They got married in Croydon, her father was Charles Wood, but there are too many Alice Matildas around to be sure that I have the right birth etc. In 1905, the cert says she lived in Croydon but in 1901 no one can find her (a few ideas have come up about why...working away from home..illegitimate?) but I can't get to the bottom of it.

Thanks,
Clare

Are they all in 1891 census as sisters?

Clare

Clare Report 22 Nov 2007 12:45

I can't get her on any census at all so I don't know sorry, very possible though as my dad thinks she had a sister called Sarah.

Thanks

I did think that, but the problem is, we know for a fact she was pregnant when she got married and we were always told that was why they got married in the first place! Therefore, when we found out that she may have lied in order to get married it was always a strong possibility!

Thanks, Julie! A possibility! :)

Well at least that opens up the possibilty! Someone else somewhere along the line was a decorator...can't quite remember who and where though!

I have to go now though, thanks everyone for all your help!

Clare

(err...it just came back to me, it was my granddad who was the decorator..lol I thought it was further back).
