Henry Sturgeon Or Henry Baker Sturgeon?

Michael, this is about the 1841 census

*The ages of people over 15 years old were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years. Therefore, someone who was actually 24 years would have their age listed as 20, and someone who was actually 27 years old would have their age listed as 25.

so it is only those under 15 who have a correct age,

Linda

Hi to everyone who helped me with this one. Just to keep you all in the picture my GGGrandfather Henry Sturgeon married a Maryann Sparke not Gathercole. This was confirmed today as I ordered my Great Grandfathers brothers Birth Cert for Spark Sturgeon born 1854 Stanton.

Regards Marion

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Linda

Are you sure about that? I thought that the actual age was recorded for minors ie under 21.

Thankyou so much to all of you. The above has given me something to work on. There were lots of Sturgeons in Stanton and I,m sure most made up the little village itself. Lovely place but soooo small. There are even streets named after the Sturgeons.
Thankyou so much once again.

Regards Marion

I believe that the Sturger one that Jim found matches the one on BVRI. The 41 census was taken June 7 at which time he would have been 20. (Christened Apr.1821)

LindainHerriotCountry Report 24 Nov 2007 14:57

If Henry was born in 1822/3 then he would be under 20 on the 1841 census, so his age should have been rounded down to 15. I have looked through all of the actual images and there are three of them.
There is the one Jim found above, he is an ag lab. thereis another Henry Sturgeon age 20, who is a farm servant in an unrelated family for Elizabeth Harvey age 70.
There is also a Henry age 15 in Bury lane Stanton. He is an ag lab and his family is Thomas 50 and Elizabeth 40.
The writing on the images is poor, so only the first one is shown as Sturgeon on the Ancestry transcriptions

My Fault Jim I gave you 1857 birth year for my Great Grandfather. No its about 1852.
Sorry. I have found Sparks for 1891 married to a Mary ? They also have a little boy Thomas Sparks born 1890. Thomas and Mary? married in Thingo. I have looked on free bmd but it gives no mention of the brides name as it states Thomas Sparks Twice.

Jim sorry you have lost me. My Great Grandfather George Sturgeon is shown on later Census still at the Horse Shoes with my Great Grandmother Emma.
Beside my Great Great Grandparents Graves are my Great Grandparents. You have confused me Jim.

Sophie my Great Grandfather also burried at Stanton was George Sturgeon no middle name I believe. I have him as being born 1852 and he died 1826. I do have his Police Papers which gave me a guide to his birth year. They state he joined the Police Force 1873 aged 21 years. Hope this answers your question.
Regards Marion

Ps They also state he was born in the Parish Of Stanton

Thankyou so much for all your replies. I have just checked my F/T and my GGGrandfather died
01/09/1890 and is burried at St John The Baptist Church in Stanton. I dont know why I didn,t think of getting Spark Sturgeon,s Birth Cert before but I have him as Thomas Spark Sturgeon. Henry Baker Sturgeon married a Mary Ann Bobby born in Wattisfield but I have no surname for the other Mary Ann also born wattisfield. I do have my GGGrandfather as being born 1822/23 so as Michael and Jim stated Henry Baker Sturgeon was some years older. So many Sturgeons in Suffolk and Stanton it becomes so difficult.

Did you cut & paste the census info? It's just that Mary Anne is shown as male.

It looks to me as if the person who told you he was called Henry Baker was simply wrong and had confused him with the other chap.

The Lady Marion Report 24 Nov 2007 09:19

Can anyone help me please as I am somewhat confused regarding my Ancestors name. My Great Great Grandfather was Henry Sturgeon born in Stanton Suffolk about 1820? My Great Grandfather was George Sturgeon born approx 1857 also Stanton. Henry Sturgeon married a Mary Ann? Sometime ago it was stated to me that my GGGrandfather was Henry Baker Sturgeon and although I have entered this information on my F/T I am not convinced. Born at the same time was another Henry Baker Sturgeon who also married a Mary Ann and his profession was a School Master. My Henry was an Inn Keeper and Owner of the Horse Shoes Pub. I was able to visit my Great Great Grandparents grave site some weeks back and recorded on his Tomb Stone reads Henry Sturgeon no mention of the name Baker for a second name. As both Henry,s came from Stanton and both wives came from Wattisfield with the name of Mary Ann I am soooooooooo Confused. Can anyone confirm one way or another my GGGrandfathers true identity.

Regards and Thanks Marion
