Short service - 3 years with the colours - form signed at Oswestry. 14/09/1914

"discharged no longer fit for war service, although fit for civilian employment"22/ 07/1915

I don't think this is your Daniel .. he only served in Britain, and had a wife Frances, living in Oswestry.

except now this one jumped out!!

British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920

Pamela

Pamela Report 25 Nov 2007 17:45

There are 2 Arthur Williams born in Cardiff, but no others born in Wales for that birth year +/- 1 year.

Nothing on Daniel Watkins either.

'Discharge due to surplus Army requirements' is a term still used today, and usually means some kind of wrong doing!!

Pamela THANK YOU so much I always suspected it was somthing like that and that confirms it. !!!
I am surprised there is nothing on Arthur though?

Pamela Report 25 Nov 2007 17:41

As a saving grace .. his character was given as "good" !

I don't think there's much else to glean from these records.

As for the other 2, there will only be pension discharge records if they survived.

Daniel I know served in Iraq ( Mesopotamia) in those days, and Arthur had suffered a head wound, from shrapnel I think as he always wore a hat to cover it.I met him a few times as a child and thats all I can remember,so would have thought he would have been sent home with a pension for being wounded

Lol ... looks like you'll know the next bit then!!

He appears to have been sent back from France due to being "under age" and discharged due to "disputed age on occupational Index card" !!!

Pamela

Pamela Report 25 Nov 2007 17:33

aha.. he was in France for 27/01/1916-18/01/1917, the other time being in "Britain".

On his discharge medical report it says:

Unit 881 Battery 351 Brigade

He was posted for duty on 16/01/1917 in Dublin.
His trade was said to be Coal Miner.
Medical report stamped 09/12/1918 Woolwich.
"discharged as a coal miner"

then it gets a bit more interesting...

Hi Pamela I am sure you have the right one although the birth year is wrong Mother was margaret but cannot confirm address, but his year of birth in my grandmothers address book had been altered and I often wondered why. I think he put his age on to get into the army as they sometimes did. Then inlater years put it right. Val

Here goes... Short Service Enlistment record (for the duration of the war) signed 13/05/1915.
DOB 05/05/1899 (presumably should say 1896?)
Think his trade is "Haulier"
Marital Status : Single
5'6" tall
NOK Margaret Williams, Mother, Aberford.
His first posting began the next day, 14/05/1915 as a Driver. I can't tell where.
Various postings until 1917 on this page, but I can't tell you where.
Transferred to Class W 14/12/1918.
Discharges as surplus to Army requirement, not having suffered impairment since entry into the Army, 14/12/1918.
so I guess W was a "reserve" or something that he could be called up again. Sorry I'm no expert...
more to come..

Reg is right.. searching on their DOB's may reveal something.
