Thank you for all your replies.

It seems you have had the same trouble I have.

Rose, I have the marriage certificate for his marriage to Rhoda and it states that he was born in 1832.

Im not sure if that can be trusted as accurate as all the census returns say something different.

And thank you to Gwyn,I did not know they were in Winchester as well.

Regards Jodie

I can't see a George Vane born 1823 in the 1881 census. There's one born 1829. He's age 52 with wife Rhoda and children Alfred 13, Edith 6, Ann 4 and Lillian 1.
In 1871 he's age 48 with wife Rhoda and children Alice E. 14, George 11, Ellen 10, Emily 7, Caroline 6, Alfred 3 and Harriet 7 months.
In 1861 he's with first wife Alice E. and living with in-laws, the Marchants. Curiously he's only 27 but the children match the other census, Alice E. 3, George 1, and Ellen 7 months. There's also an older daughter Louisa Jane 6. Also he says he's born Brighton in this census and his name is spelled Vain.

Is there any kind soul that will be going to Portsmouth record office?

I have been stumped by my greatx3 grandfather,George Vane for months now.

I have a possible year of birth as 1823 from the 1881 census but he apparently was also born in 1832 according to the 1871 census.

Both say that he was born in Portsmouth and I know his father was Joseph Vane.

I feel like Ive come to a dead end so would be so grateful for any help from someone in Portsmouth!

Many thanks

Jodie
