Hi Ethel! That is indeed the "right marriage", I'd say -- it's the one I put in the thread a few posts ago. ;)

Now stop duplicating efforts and find that sister Edith, dammit!! I won't be able to do any procrastinating today, so I pass the torch.

Hi Fiona. I have also been having a look for you, and found the birth of the son in 1906. I think I have found the right marriage for William to Emma Atkins. 1895. April/June Qtr. reg in Gower. vol 11a 1336. Copy of the birth certificate for William David should give his Mums maiden name. and this should confirm or deny the above marriage.
Marriage certificate will give Father's names and occupations and witnesses who may be siblings.

They are on the 1901 census living in Henley. Oxon.
William E 30. Photographer. Own Business. Born Newington.
Emma. 34. Born Aberdare. Wales.

Hope this helps. Ethel.

I've looked for Edith after 1881, to no avail. Searched for her with her surname, without her surname using date/place of birth details ... Checked out potential marriages, searched for her by those potential surnames, and for the potential grooms, and for the potential grooms' other potential brides (to rule them out), and haven't found a one of the buggers.

I also checked the Home Children site the govt of Canada maintains, in case Edith had been a child emigrant here, as many orphaned children / children in care in the 19th century were. No trace of her in those records.

Stumped, I'm afraid, unless you can identify one of the marriages in the GRO as being her -- just search at FreeBMD for Edith Marshall marriages in the guesstimated time period, and start ordering certificates at random, I guess. ;)

That information is incredible. Thank you. My mum, Mary Marshall, will be thrilled.

Looks like it could be their marriage:

Name: William Marshall + Emma Atkins
Year of Registration: 1895
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Gower
County: Glamorgan
Volume: 11a
Page: 1336

Would this likely be his birth?

Name: William Edward Marshall
Year of Registration: 1869
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Newington
County: Surrey
Volume: 1d
Page: 276

This is very probably them in 1881:

Name: William Marshall
Age: 10
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1871
Relation: Inmate
Gender: Male
Where born: St Mary Newington, Surrey, England
Occupation: Scholar

Name: Edith Marshall
Age: 12
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1869
Relation: Inmate
Gender: Female
Where born: St Mary Newington, Surrey, England
Occupation: Scholar

Civil Parish: Hanwell
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England

Street address: "Central London Dist School"
Registration district: Brentford
Sub-registration district: Acton
ED, institution, or vessel: Central London District School

They seem to have been orphaned or placed in care.

The only Edith Marshall births I'd found that looked likely were indeed before William's birth, and from that record it would appear she was this one:

Name: Edith Mary Marshall
Year of Registration: 1867
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Newington
County: Surrey
Volume: 1d
Page: 257

-- their ages are both understated in 1881.

So here they are in 1871:

Name: Thomas Marshall
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1841
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Mary
Gender: Male
Where born: Taplow, Berkshire, England

Name: Mary Marshall
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1841
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: Thomas
Gender: Female
Where born: Pimlico, Middlesex, England

Civil Parish: St Mary Newington
Ecclesiastical parish: St Paul
County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: St Saviour Southwark
Sub-registration district: St Peter Walworth
ED, institution, or vessel: 5
Household schedule number: 172

Edith Marshall 3
Mary Marshall 30
Thomas Marshall 30
William Marshall 1

Will that do you for now? ;)

You could have a look at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

for the parents' marriage, search for them back further in censuses, etc.

We are looking for ancestors and also any decendants of Edith (his sister) as we know nothing of what happened to her.
Their Aunt Agnes was famous for her time with the Marshall's Cookery School in London. It would be interesting if anyone knows any further information regarding her?

But, just to keep anyone else reading / thinking of offering help up to date -- it turns out that was Fiona's person, born in Wales after all!

Hint -- I'm happy if people let me know stuff by posting it in their thread rather than by PM -- keeps all the info together for posterity. ;) And it's a whole lot easier for me to find and refer back to.

I have to go do some work, but maybe someone else will take a kick at tracking down info about William and Edith -- it's their ancestors you're after?

What info are you looking for? Ancestors, descendants ...?

This looks like their son's death:

Name: William David C Marshall
Birth Date: 15 Sep 1906
Death Registration Month/Year: Oct 1987
Age at death (estimated): 81
Registration district: Liskeard
Inferred County: Cornwall
Volume: 21
Page: 220

The death cert would give you exact date and place of death, and you might be able to search newspaper archives for an obituary that would give you info about family members, if that's what you are trying to find.

Actually, though, that death looks like the person whose birth this was:

Name: William David C Marshall
Year of Registration: 1906
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Gower
County: Glamorgan
Volume: 11a
Page: 1168

... but there doesn't seem to have been anyone with a similar name born in Surrey in 1906 ...

I am trying find information on William Edward Marshall born in London in 1869 and his sister Edith Marshall. Their aunt, Agnes Marshall, ran the Marshall's Cookery School in London.
William at some point lived in Swansea, Wales where he married Emma and then moved to Camberley, Surrey where he ran a photography shop.
William died in 1935 and his wife, Emma, in 1941.
They had one child named William David Cecil Marshall (my grandfather) born in Swansea in 1906.
