Noticed this post when I was looking in the Phillips surname list for someone else. You might want to put "Edith Phillips" in your subject line, Susan -- when your post is viewed on the general Trying To Find board there is no surname attached to it. Major system flaw, we're stuck with it.
Meanwhile, if you search at http://www.freebmd.org.uk
for Edith Phillips born 1907 ... there were a lot of them. Do you know where/when your grandmother died? If it was 1984 or later, it should be possible to identify her death in the GRO index and get a precise birthdate for her from that record, which might help, if you don't have it. If you do, tell! Do you know whether she had a middle name? Her mother's name -- given name, at least? Were her parents married by 1901, do you think?
In 1901 there are only two approximately matching Richard Phillips-s in the census who were born in Nottinghamshire. One, born c1873, is a soldier in Dorset. The other is:
Name: Richard Phillips Age: 28 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873 Relation: Son Mother's Name: Frances Gender: Male Where born: Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England Civil Parish: Worksop Ecclesiastical parish: St Cuthbert and St Mary Town: Worksop County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Registration district: Worksop Sub-registration district: Worksop ED, institution, or vessel: 7 Household schedule number: 180
Frances Phillips 67 Harry Phillips 21 Richard Phillips 28
and I imagine you've looked at him before. His occupation is wood turner; his brother is an asphalter. But aha -- his mother Frances is a Grocer-Shopkeeper.
Do you think that just might be the one?
But FreeBMD finds no Richard Phillips born in Worksop in that timeframe. Or between 1870 and 1880 in Nottinghamshire.
So ... let's see what the 1891 census says. ... And it says the same thing:
Name: Richard Phillips Age: 18 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873 Relation: Son Father's Name: William Mother's Name: Frances Gender: Male Where born: Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England
Civil Parish: Worksop Ecclesiastical parish: Priory Church Town: Worksop County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Registration district: Worksop Sub-registration district: Worksop ED, institution, or vessel: 4
Frances Phillips 56 Frank Phillips 26 Harry Phillips 12 Howard Phillips 13 Richard Phillips 18 Sarah Phillips 21 William Phillips 57
One wonders whether he was a child of Frances before her marriage to William, and born with a different surname. Checking the 1881 census ... same thing, but we get an initial:
Name: Richard W. Phillips Age: 9 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1872 Relation: Son Father's Name: William Mother's Name: Frances Gender: Male Where born: Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England Civil Parish: Worksop County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Street address: Rock Cottage Registration district: Worksop Sub-registration district: Worksop
Father William, born in Worksop, is "Grocer & Topplater Asphalter".
So why was he never born? Searching for Richard Phillips born 1871 to 1875 anywhere at all ... well, you check it out. There's one later than 1873 with the right middle name in an interesting place that isn't Nottinghamshire!
Now, if you think that's your man, you search at FreeBMD for his parents' marriage -- search for a marriage for William Phillips with spouse Frances, which will find you pages where a William Phillips appears with a bride named Frances, who may or may not be the person he married.
Nothing seems to match up. I'm still thinking that Richard may have been a child of Frances not named Phillips.
In the household in 1881:
Charles Hy. Phillips 2 Frances Phillips 47 Francis Phillips 16 Herbert H. Phillips 3 John Phillips 20 Mary Jane Phillips 15 Richard W. Phillips 9 Sarah Phillips 11 William Phillips 47
there's a fair gap between the 9-yr-old and the 3-yr-old. Maybe that's the period when Frances and William married?
Try searching for a William Phillips - Frances marriage in Worksop 1870-1878. Nothing there, but you could widen the search.
I'm afraid this isn't terribly helpful! It does look like that could be the right family in Worksop though -- grocers, in Nottinghamshire, which matches up with what you thought.
If you come up with anything, just post in this thread! (I hate private messages that make me go looking for threads, and if you post info here anybody who might know something or be able to help could see it.)
Oh -- one last attempt, it having just dawned on me that there were children in the 1881 household born before 1871. And there they all are:
Anne Phillips 8 Frances Phillips 37 Frank Phillips 7 John Phillips 70 John Phillips 9 Mary Phillips 5 Sarah Phillips 1 William Phillips 37 - Carter
So they're in Worksop in 1871, Richard was born after that census, and I can't find his birth. Maybe you can do better! ... unless this is actually the info you already had ...
