Hi Germaine,

How much do they charge to search the 1901 census then?

Hi Betty the 1901 isn't on yet.
The 1911 on National Archives is free :-))
You can get images of the 1901 from Dublin at a charge think it is about £3 not sure off hand but you need an address.
If you find them in 1911 and think they may be at the same address thn you could send to Dublin for the images.
Sorry can't be of more help.

This is the letter I got saying where to send and cost but it is from Feb 2006 so prices might be different.
Dear Germaine,

With reference to your enquiry, household returns of the 1901 and 1911
Census can be ordered from the National Archives at a cost of 2.54 Euro
per copy, inclusive of postage. Cheques, bank drafts or money orders
should be made payable to the "National Archives". The equivalent in
Pounds Sterling is acceptable.
The maximum number of orders which may be made by post, at any one time,
is four. Orders for copies cannot be accepted over the phone or by
e-mail.

Request should be addressed to: National Archives, Bishop St., Dublin 8.

You should provide the name of the family, the townland or street and,
if possible, the District Electoral Division number, or, the name of the
civil parish. This may not be the same as the RC parish.

The IreAtlas townland database can be searched for place-names at:
www.leitrim-roscommon.com/ireatlas/

Both the 1901 and 1911 censuses are expected to be online by 2008-09,
with a topographical index and an index of every name that appears in
both censuses.

Ian if your ancestor was born in 1920 you will not find him on the census as it is for 1911. You could try a local latter day saint family history centre as I know they have some irish bmd indexes on microfiche and if they dont have them they can order them in.

If you know exactly where in Ireland he was born you could contact the general records office for Ireland and enquire there.

Hope that helps.

Mike, I am not sure why you have posted a request for a look up for 1940 - 1960 on this thread. Have you not read the first post on this thread.

It is actually just making people aware that the 1911 dublin census is now online.
