Many thanks for your help. You obviously know where to look & what you are doing. A seasoned computer user. I am fairly new to the computer lark. I did all my research (my mother & father's trees) by visiting various different places & visiting BMD registers @ St Catherines. Although I have had info from Dr B's re my husband's side, I have not really had time to get started. I'm still getting my head around what I have learnt about the Yates family.

If you're looking for Ellen it would probably help to know her exact date of birth. This is the only birth that matches the info you gave (1902, probably June, Manchester):

Name: Ellen Yates
Year of Registration: 1902
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Manchester (1837-1924)
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8d
Page: 252

There are a couple of births in Leigh, where the famiily was in 1901, but not in that precise time frame.

If she survived to 1984, which isn't inconceivable, it could be possible to identify her in the post-1984 death index by her given name and birthdate, assuming she married and would have a different surname at death. At the least, you could investigate anyone who matched the given name and birthdate, e.g. by looking for the marriage and getting the cert to see whether father's name matched, etc.

Hold on. Alan was born Jan 1902 and Ellen was born Jun 1902? I'm thinking not ...

Might this be him?

Name: Allan Yates
Year of Registration: 1902
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Leigh
County: Greater Manchester, Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 299

I'm thinking it's your spelling of Allan that's off.

That would mean that the Ellen I identified wouldn't be your Ellen. She might more likely be one of these:

Dorothy Ellen Yates 1903 Apr-May-Jun Leigh
Mary Ellen Yates 1904 Jul-Aug-Sep Leigh
Ellen Yates 1909 Jan-Feb-Mar Leigh
Ellen Yates 1909 Jan-Feb-Mar Leigh

(The last two don't seem to be duplicates.)

It probably would be wise to establish exactly when she was born, by obtaining the correct birth certificate.

There are two people at GR with Ellen Yates-s in their tree, born 1904 and 1905, in Manchester/Lancashire. They may be your siblings or cousins, of course; if not, probably worth a contact.

Since I did answer a couple of your questions -- when Allan and Fred travelled to Canada, and on what ships -- I trust my effort has been of some use.

Thanks for your help. I have Dr Barnados info sheet following Alan up to 1942 and he was still in Canada. Fred came back to England and it was only when he died we actually find out he came from Manchester as was not Canadian as we had thought.

Marriage info is available on line for Ontario and Manitoba, two possible destinations, for up to about 1924 (after that, it is protected personal information). No Alan Yates marriage is recorded in those provinces during that period. Also no death, up to about 10 years later, there or in Saskatchewan.

British Columbia's site is too annoying for words and I'm giving up on it; you can try here:
http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm

Given Alan's age, it's hard to guess what his future may have held. Many boys became essentially farm labour; my mother's aunt's husband was one, and he went on to become a farmer himself.

If Alan remained in Canada ... it's very hard to do research here for the last 80 years, because of privacy legislation.

The passenger list database is here:

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/index-e.html

Unfortunately, it is not a searchable index of names; it can be searched by vessel and date only. You do have the vessel and date for Alan now, at least it looks like.

Unfortunately, searching for the Corinthian arriving in 1913, there doesn't seem to be a matching arrival date in the search results.

However, http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action
has:

YATES A 10 M 1913 London Canada Saint John Nb

and you can pay to view the record there.

It also has:

YATES Fred 6 M 1913 Liverpool Canada Halifax

Might that be him?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Dec 2007 19:48

Likewise, this is the only Ellen, and that's obviously not your Ellen:

1. YATES Ellen 7 F Sardinian 1893

but those records are not 100% complete.

There is a Percy Yates who appears to be too old to be yours:

1. YATES Percy 14 M Dominion 1908

but ages were not always accurate. Your Percy would have been about 11 in 1908, it seems. The age on that record could have been in error.

Ah, I see what we're actually missing is the ages / dates of birth of the children who were not in the 1901 household. Do you have them? I picked that Allan based on the date of the voyage, but the age could have been wrong.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Dec 2007 19:42

These are the only Freds, and they're not right:

21. YATES Fred 13 M Sarnia 1894
22. YATES Frederick 8 M Siberian 1898

Hi Victor yes it is. I am trying to find a descendant of baby Ellen. Have knowledge of Fred, Sam & Harriet. Alan was sent to Canada with Fred in 1913 but on different dates. Do you know where I can look re what ship they went over on? Fred came back to England. (my husband's line) I'm not sure about Alan. Percy may have died young as I have some info 16.08.1904 from Dr Barnado's and he is not mentioned. Alice, I have yet to find someone who has her on their tree. Thank you for your assistance.
