Suzy Report 4 Dec 2007 23:32

Trying to trace my mother's natural family. Her birth name was Edith Mary Miller and she was born in 1911 in East Ham. Mum's natural mother (also called Edith Mary Miller, born 1886) came from a large family who were living in Fisher St, Barking (1901census) and she had several brothers and sisters - Henry, Margaret, Richard, George, Edward, Lillian, Grace. Her parents were Richard Miller (who was born either in Germay - 1891 census - or Whitechapel - 1901 census) and Louise (nee Coombes) from Torquay.

Can anyone help?

Suzy, have you seen Marilyn's post? (If so, it's a good idea to answer it in the thread, so other people know you've got the info.)

The marriage certificate should give you Richard's father's name and might give you an idea of where he was from.

It will also give you Louise's father's name, so you should be able to identify her in earlier censuses and learn her approx age and her parents' names, for getting her birth cert and their marriage cert, and finding the parents in earlier censuses, and so on back.

Hi Kathryn,

Thanks for advice re posting reply via thread. Did get Marilyn's post, followed advice and have been able to trace Coombes family back to Devon (still working on that one - hence delay in replying to you).

Richard Miller's a problem though, marriage cert only gives residence as East Ham, occ. labourer and father as Richard Miller, labourer.

But have traced Louise Coombes on 1881 census and she was visiting a Carl (born Hannover, Germany) and Emily (I think this may be Louise's older sister) Ruhmann. So Richard may have been born in Germany.

But now I'm stuck with him.

Any more advice out there gratefully received.
