Here's you Neilson solution too, it's his mothers maiden name...

1891 >>Mary A E Wood 17, she's actually 11 !!...transcription error!

Claire

Claire Report 5 Dec 2007 12:23

That's a very good point!

The info you obtained for me from the 1881 and 1891 census - do you believe these are the same families? As there is a child, Mary, in the 1891 census who should have been 7 at the time of the last census, but does not appear there.

Don't discount it yet!.. They have settled fairly coastal... let me do some more rooting about. It may be that one of the children married a Norweigen and stories have gotten confused over time... but Wood is not exactly a Norweigen name!

Thanks so much for all your help Wayne, I really appreciate it. The norway story must have been just that, a story.

Claire

It could have been a name passed thru the maternal line or even his mothers maiden name?

Thanks for your help!

I have no proof that his father was from Norway as I just have no idea where to start looking, all i have found is Herbert Neilson's birth record and marriage record. My grandmother was always told that her grandfather was Norwegian, unfortunately she never met him and the stories were never passed on to me so this is the extent of my knowledge.

I was wondering if Herbert's father may have been called Neilson as this does not sound typically English of the time.

Claire

Do you have prrof ie census records that say he was from Norway or is this just a family story passed down?

Claire

Claire Report 5 Dec 2007 11:49

My great great grandfather was Herbert Neilson Wood, born around 1878.

I have managed to find information about him, but now am stuck as, as far as the family knows, the trail then goes back to Norway through his father.

I have no idea on his father's name and don't even know where to start searching for relatives from norway - does anyone have any tips?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Claire
