That's great, it confirms they were living at number 1 in 1871. So I wonder why she was living alone with her sister at number 6 only 30 years later? I suspect (as Pamela says) mother & father died (of what?) - elder sister married perhaps? But why move to number 6 with a married German couple as boarders?

Some more digging needed I think

Thanks very much for all your help, it's much appreciated and has given me a lot to think about.

Sorry everyone, I've just realised I put the wrong date in and come back to change it and found all these replies - you're all very quick off the mark - thanks very much for the replies so far, loads of info I haven't gone into yet !!

I meant the 1871 census, she was born in 1876 and in the 1901 census she is listed as at number 6 Bostock Street with her sister. I wondered who might have lived at number 1 when she was born.

Michael, what's this reference I need? and what site can I enter it into to find out? (Sorry I know it's probably a basic question, but I am new to this).

The image of the 1901 census I have is page 10, and begins at number 4 Bostock Street, so I need page 9 - but how do I search for an image of page 9?

(By the way, thanks to everyone for all the other info, given me loads more to look into).

They're there on the 81 census, Winnifred Sims, age 4, with parents George & Mary and sisters Annie & Jane. Although no house number is given the next house is 3 Bostock Rd. (The name is transcribed Winefried)

If she was born in 1876 the first census she would appear in is 1881 - it is free to view on Ancestry (//www.ancestry.co.uk/) and you can do an address search.

Also, if you search on Ancestry on any of the censuses, you can look at the image which might have the address. It depends on the area. In large towns it would probably give the street and house number; in small villages it might just give a house name or even nothing.

There was no census in 1876. Do you mean 1871? What site are you using to look up the census?

If you look up the Winifred Sims that you found it will give you the reference for that enumeration district and you should be able then to do a search using just that ref - no names - which will show you everyone in the district

Search for an address in the census'? I'm a newbie trying to find out who was at 1 Bostock Street, St George in the East, Middx in the 1876 census.

All the searches I have found only do names etc and aside from actually going and looking (I'm disabled and can't get out so that's out of the question) I can't find any other way.

The reason I want to know is my relation Winifred Emily Sims is recorded as being born their in 1876 (April 8th) but she isn't listed (obviously) on the census and the searches on related names haven't brought anything up.(There is a Winifred Sims listed at number 6 Bostock St, aged 25 alone with her 22 year old sister.

Any help appreciated.
