What are you trying to find, friend gardener? ;)

Not to be impertinent, but you're not going to find Violet!

Name: Violet Evelyn Smith
Birth Date: 18 Nov 1905
Death Registration Month/Year: Mar 1984
Age at death (estimated): 78
Registration district: Merthyr Tydfil
Inferred County: Mid Glamorgan
Volume: 27
Page: 346

You can find her birth very easily, and for no charge, by searching at:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

Just search for the birth of a Violet Button, registered 1905 to 1906 -- 1906 to be on the safe side, because a birth in November could have been registered in January of the following year.

Now, you don't specify what info you have. Maybe you have the info about her birth registration already. In case you don't, I'm going to help you out because there's an error in the transcription at FreeBMD.

You should still do this search yourself, and examine the image of the original page, to get the correct info. Then, you should submit a correction to FreeBMD -- the instructions are there on the page when you go to look at the image (by clicking on the spectacles icon beside her name, once you've found it).

Here are the details:

Name: Violet Evelyn Button
Year of Registration: 1905
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Bedwelty
County: Monmouthshire
Volume: 11a
Page: 139

... and here's a problem. The stupid image-viewing page at FreeBMD won't load for me. So I'm going to check the image at Ancestry.

Well, there's nothing wrong with it except that someone made a typo in the original: "Bedwellty" should be "Bedwelty", as it says up above. The page and volume number are correct. (So there's no correction to submit after all -- the error is in the original document, not in the transcription. But you can attach a "postem" to her name, with an email address, so anyone looking for her in future can contact you.)

So now you order her birth certificate:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates

and it will tell you her parents' names -- if that's what you're looking for. Then you can find their marriage, and look for them in the 1901 census, and find their births, and look for them and their parents in the earlier censuses, and so on back.

... If that's what you're looking for!
