I have a Gladys Mulcaster Bell who was born 6 April 1886, Carlisle, Cumberland.
Her parents were James Bell and Alice Cummins Bell.

On the 1891 Census at RG12/182 Fol, 106 Page 26 in Stamford Hill, Hackney, London, James was 31 and a Draper, Alice C. Bell 30, Gladys age 4 and George B. Bell age 1.

I just cannot find this family on the 1901 census, but am especially looking for Gladys Mulcaster Bell.

Can anyone help please?
Many thanks
Jo

Did Gladys put any occupation down on her marriage certificate?

Have you found James and Alice in 1901?

There are lots of deaths for James Bell bt 1891 and 1901 but none for Alice C Bell. Do you have James' middle name?

Hello Suzanne

Gladys's father James Bell was born in 1858 Cumberland and died 28 November 1893, so he never appeared on the 1901 Census.

Alice Cummins Bell died in 1945
In the 1901 census, she was possibly at RG13/155 Folio 142 Page 37 with her Mother.
No Gladys though!!

No, I don't have a middle name for James, but that won't help for the 1901 census

Its Gladys Mulcaster Bell I am trying to find. I looked under BALL as well!!

Many thanks for your help

Janice

Yes, that is the Alice Bell age 38 with her mother Sarah M. Bell. Gladys is not here though

I found some in Cheshire and Lancashire or that area last night, and after pondering, decided they were definitely not her.

She must have been at a boarding school somewhere
I have done the initials i.e. G.M. Bell
Still cannot find her.
Thank you for your help anyway

Regards
Jo

Jo,

Is Sarah M. Bell Alice's mother or mother-in-law?

I see that the children were born in Stanwix (just north of the river at Carlisle).

There is a family of Bells and Hendersons and Baines living in Stanwix in 1901. There is a George Bell, aged 11, shown as nephew.

Just above him are two children aged 13 and 14, where the enumerator has got very confused about whether they are male or female.

The 14 yr old may be James or Jane (looks like James changed to Jane)

The name of the 13 year is very difficult to read, but appears to end in the letter s.

I can't easily find this family in 1891.

Is it possible that James/Jane is not the sibling of the other two, that the 13 yr could be Gladys, and George her little brother? Stretching it, but perhaps worth ruling out?

Hmm, now found them in 1891. Head Mary J Bell, living in Stanwix. Nephew William Bell aged 13, so it looks like the changes on the 1901 left the position correct. It may still be possible though, that the James/Jane individual should be Gladys.

Would need to find a connection to Gladys' father James Bell.

Signing off for a while.

The one i posted in 1901 says Alice unmarried ,also should be mother in law ,so i don't think this is your right Alice

Joan and Janice and also Ivy

Sorry I misled you with saying that the 1901 Alice was mine. It is a very confusing family.

I have them on the 1891 Census at 131 Gibson Building, Stamford Hill, Hackney North
James Bell 31 Drapers Asst. b Stanwix, cumberland
Alice C. Bell Wife 30 b LDN Grays?
Gladys M. Bell Dau 4 b Stanwix Cumberland
George B. Bell Son 1 b Stanwix, Cumberland

Alice Cummins Bell (nee Blake) her parents were George Blake and Sarah Norton

James Bell's parents were James Bell from Carlisle and a Jane ? (don't know surname)

James Bell died in 1893, so he will not be on the 1901 census.

Ivy - I will check out the Stanwix family

Thank you all for your help
