Death for William Wilks

Please, please, can anyone help!?

I am trying to establish a connection between my Gt.Grandparents. I cannot find a marriage (possibly they never were as there is a huge age difference?) so I'm trying to find my Gt.Grandfathers death in the hopes my Gt.Grandmother is on the death cert.

William WILKS b. 1838 Hartlebury Worcester. His Occupation throughout was 'Cab Diver Journeyman'.
'Spouse' was Louisa Jane POWELL b. 1874 St.George, B/Ham. (possibly married before to someone named SIMONS but haven't found this marriage either!).

I can trace William thru all the Cenus's except 1891.

In 1881 he was living with his 1st wife Esther Annis in Kings Norton.

In 1891 Esther was living at the same address with their children, but William is not listed (nor anywhere else that I can find!). She died in 1897.

In 1901 William is living with my ancestor Louisa Jane POWELL as husband and wife (though no marriage has been found thus far) at 9 Eleanor Place, Paxton Road, B/Ham. Their 2 children William G & Doris M were with Louisa's (POWELL)relatives.

In 1902 Leonard Albert WILKES was born. The family were still living in Paxton Rd, B/Ham.

By 1917 he is listed as Deceased on his daughters (Doris WILKES) marriage cert. She is the eldest child an was the 1st to marry.

His surname fluctuated between WILKS and WILKES depending on who registered the childs births! It seems that William called himself WILKS and Louisa used WILKES.

I've already obtained one death cert which is not my William;
Sept 1/4 1909 6d 35 B/Ham - This William has a different spouse and a different occupation.

I'm at a bit of a loss - what is the best way to establish a connection between William & Louisa?
