Thanks for your replies. Glitter Baby, I also wondered if he had joined the army or even emigrated, seeing as both his parents had abandoned him, though his grandparents were still alive in 1901.

Sandra, I'm afraid that this Claud Coy is 10 yrs too young but thanks for looking.

Jennifer my only thought on this is that Claud could be in the Army serving in the Boer War

William Coy was my first cousin 3 times removed, so not close, but I just had to find out about his life when I realised that on the 1881 census he had a different wife to the one on the 1901 census.

I have 2 marriage certs of William Coy; the first to Caroline Shaw who he married in 1878 in Derby and the second one to Elizabeth Mary Goldspink, 20/8/1894 at Lambeth Register Office.

William was committing bigamy with this second marriage (even though it says on his marriage cert that he was a bachelor). He was in fact still married to Caroline Shaw.

He and Caroline had a son Claud Cyril in May 1881, born Nottingham. I have his birth cert, and he is with his grandparents, James and Mary Ann Coy in 1891 in Harlaxton, Lincs, so must have been left behind by his mother. I cannot find Claud in 1901 and would dearly love to, can anyone help. I have searched Death Index for 10 yrs up to 1901 and not found him or a marriage.

William and Caroline split up and Caroline went to live with Alfred Cornelius Cooke and took his name though I have never been able to find a marriage. They had 8 children, the first Walter born 1883 in Nottingham, all are in Civil Reg Index under the name Cooke. One reason I got on this trail was when I realised that Caroline and Cornelius ended up in Rutland near where I now live.

William Coy is in Nottingham in 1891 as a Boarder in a Dentist’s house and then London in 1901 as below.

1901 Census
RG13; Piece: 460; Folio: 35; Page: 8.
William Coy age 47 (1854) born Harlaston, Lincs (on image it is actually Harlaxton)
occ: Hairdresser
Elizabeth M Coy wife age 37 (1864) born London
Winifred M Coy daug age 7 (1894) born Kingston

I cannot find a Birth Entry for Winifred M Coy, the only one that COULD be relevant is one for Winifred Goldspink 1895 2Q Lambeth page 474. If this is the right one why would Winifred be registered in her mother’s maiden name if she was married in 1894? Any thoughts?

So what I am asking, if anyone has waded through all this is can you find Claud Cyril Coy for me in 1901?

Thanks for reading this, Jennifer
