Hi,
Does anyone have any information about George Steen, born c 1838 in Cheshire, possibly Birkenhead? He was the son of George Steen and Jane Taylor.
Regards,
Val.

What information are you after -- what he did after getting born, or who his ancestors were?

Any other info you have -- marriage, kids ... -- helps anybody trying to help!

He must've been born before 1838, because I'm not seeing him in the GRO index (starts mid-1837).

You're presumably getting that birth info from the record in the IGI -- a submitted record, no batch number even.

Sure did a good job of hiding himself in the 41 and 51, and I imagine anything I find after that you already have.

1861:

Name: George Steen
Age: 23
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1838
Relation: Son
Mother's Name: Jane
Gender: Male
Where born: B'Head, Cheshire, England

Civil Parish: Poulton Cum Seacombe
Ecclesiastical parish: St Paul
County/Island: Cheshire
Country: England

Registration district: Birkenhead
Sub-registration district: Wallasey
ED, institution, or vessel: 8
Household schedule number: 9

Margaret Sparrow 30
Charles Steen 19
George Steen 23
Jane Steen 57
Ralph Steen 16

I might not be surprised if this were him in 1881:

Name: George Steen
Age: 43
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1838
Gender: Male
Where born: Farnsworth, Surrey, England
Civil Parish: Tranmere
County/Island: Cheshire
Country: England
Street address: "Birkenhead Union Workhouse"
Occupation: Farrier
Registration district: Birkenhead
Sub-registration district: Tranmere

with carelessness on the part of the workhouse management.

But oh look! 1841 --

Name: George Steen
Age: 3
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1838
Gender: Male
Where born: Hampshire, England

Civil Parish: Fareham
Hundred: Fareham Division
County/Island: Hampshire
Country: England

Registration district: Fareham
Sub-registration district: Fareham

Charlotte Steen 1
Elizth Steen 10
** George Steen 50
George Steen 3
** Jeane Steen 34
Margareth Steen 10
Thos Steen 20
Wm Steen 5

Sure looks like him.

Could be death of father George:

Name: George Steen
Year of Registration: 1852
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Wirral (1837-1974)
County: Cheshire
Volume: 8a
Page: 283
(page number also recorded as 28, which is probably the one in error)

and George's own death? --

Name: George Steen
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1837
Year of Registration: 1888
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Age at Death: 51
District: Birkenhead (1861-1998)
County: Cheshire, Merseyside
Volume: 8a
Page: 317

Oh look, there's a real entry in the IGI:

GEORGE STEEN
12 JAN 1838 Christening:
11 FEB 1838 Walton On Thames, Surrey, England
Father: GEORGE STEEN
Mother: JANE
Batch: C040381

but he's the only Steen in that batch.

From the ages of the children in the 1841 household, it looks like Jane was a second wife.

Another unsubstantiated submitted record, but could be George Sr's first marriage:

GEORGE STEEN
Spouse: ELIZABETH HOLLAND
Marriage: 08 DEC 1817 Chester St Mary, , Cheshire, England

i.e. she would be the mother of Thomas in the 1841 household, e.g.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Dec 2007 22:15

This would appear to be another of the childen in the 1861 household:

Name: Ralph Steen
Year of Registration: 1845
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Wirral (1837-1974)
County: Cheshire
Volume: 19
Page: 338

and his birth cert would get the parents' names for sure.

As far as I can see, what's in the IGI about this family is mainly a load of crap, in terms of George's birth at least. Someone has lifted info from the censuses and submitted it, and goodness knows where the Jane Taylor name came from, although it could be perfectly correct and may have been taken from a birth cert like that one.

I wonder whether George Steen Sr. wasn't one of the Irish crowd seen in the IGI.

And now we see what Val thinks -- by reply in a post in this thread please, not by private message!

Thank you both for your help.
The 1861 entry is definitely right. Margaret is his sister, who married William Sparrow, although I don't know where William was at that time. Men in the area were often at sea. Some other members of my family were.
The reason I have had trouble finding George is that I have been looking for a GS born in Cheshire. The info about him being born elsewhere is probably correct. It just never occurred to me, as the rest of the family are from Birkenhead. As the 1861 census says that GS was born in Birkenhead, I thought he must have been. I know that details are not always gospel, but from Birkenhead to Surrey is a long way and I had no reason to think that there was a connection. Admittedly, the place of birth of George's mother in 1861 is difficult to read.

Thanks, again. I will re think all about George, with your new info.

Best regards,
Val.
