Hi Margaret,

I'm not sure about the one in 1881, he seems to have been born in St Mary's in the later Census.

But your rellie is only 24 in 1871, and I can't find his brother Charles in 1881 either, so maybe you need to have a look for Charles as well, or someone who has the actual discs for 1881, it is just possible that something has been missed, or they all went abroad?

Any idea what happened to the brother Thomas?

Not having any luck with Mary Shirley either.

Kind regards
Amanda

Hi Amanda

In 1871 he was living with his brother Charles and working as a bricklayer. He was 34 years old. In 1873 he married Mary Shirley. It is strange that I can not find Mary either in 1881.

I had a look at the Army one in 1881 there are married soldiers. If he was about 34 years in 1871 then he would be about 44 years old in 1881 that is why I felt it couldn't be him.

You could be right about him using another name as I have not been able to find his birth.

I will keep searching. Thank you for taking a look for me it's really appreciated

Margaret

Hi Margaret,

I have also had a good look for them in 1881, they simply don't seem to appear on it.

You mention the one in Aldershot, unmarried, was he in the Army?

If so, I think it could possibly be your man, unless this one has been ruled out in 1891.

Somewhere on here a while ago, maybe a few years ago now, it was said that men were not allowed to marry before the age of 30, although some of them did and kept it secret.

It is rather strange that they were of quite an age to be having only 2 young children living with them in 1891 when they married so many years before, maybe they only lived together and started a family after his time in the Army?

John's brother Tom, seems to have been registered with Tom as his second name, maybe John was also a second name for your John.

I could also be wrong in my thoughts!

Kind regards
Amanda

Surely a marriage in 1857 would tie in with the 1861 census...........!!!!!!!!!!

And what about the possible deaths for first wife?

Or did you discount them completely??????

In 1861, Elizabeth is George's wife....there is nothing to suggest that she is the mother of Charles and John.

All relationships on census records are based on the head of the household..........

Tetley Report 8 Dec 2007 23:18

My G.Grandfather John Hamblen was born aprox. 1848. Christchurch,Bournemouth. He married Mary Shirley 28.6.1873. In the parish of Holdenhurst,in the County of Southampton. His father was George Hamblen occupation gardener. Charles Hamblen & Mary Ann Hamblen were witnesses.

In 1901 John & Mary are living in the parish of St.Mary Extra,Southampton.

In1891 John & Mary were living
at Springboune,Christchurch. His occupation. Bricklayer.

In 1881 I cannot find the family at all.

In 1871 he was living with his brother Charles Hamblen.

In 1861 he was living with his parents George & Elizabeth but when I looked at the birth date ab.13 I can not see how Elizabeth can be his mother going by her age 24 years.

On the 1851 census he is ab.3 living with his parents George & Ruth. So I checked for Ruth's death after 1851 but nothing. I have looked for a marriage for George & Elizabeth between 1851 &1861 but no luck with that either.

I have not been able to find John's birth. Also he was married to Mary in 1873 but they do not seem to be on any 1881 census.

Can any of you help me out please?
