And now I see you knew every word of that:

Any reason for not sharing?

On Leonard's enrolment papers, he reports having served in South Africa, i.e. in the Anglo-Boer war. His service in that war can be seen listed here:

I realize it's Mary Elizabeth Saunders Cayley you're most interested in. She may have remarried, I would think. Leonard enlisted in June 1915, and they could have had children in Canada before that.

There are two Cayley listings in Alberta at present, one in Calgary and the other, I think, in Ford McMurray. They might be your best starting place.

Do you know the name of the daughter who accompanied them to Canada, and maybe her birthdate? It might be possible to find some reference to her on the net. Alberta vital statistics are not searchable on line, however.

I'm going home to bed finally now, but if there's anything else I can help you find, let me know -- by posting here rather than by private message though, please. ;)

This is the record of his enrolment in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces:

... actually, the URL is too complex; go here:

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/cef/001042-100.01-e.php

and search for Leonard CAYLAY.

When you get his record page, click on his name. There will be a link to see the image of his enrolment attestation form.

His next of kin is given as Mary Cayley in Calgary, Alberta. His dob is 21 July 1880, in Croydon, Surrey. From the GRO birth index, that seems to be your Leonard.

Janet ... I checked my usual sources, and unfortunately there seems to be some sad news. It seems that Leonard was killed in WWI.

In memory of
Sapper
LEONARD CAYLEY
who died on December 9, 1916
Military Service:
Service Number: 447316
Force: Army
Unit: Canadian Engineers
Division: 3rd Field Coy.
Cemetery:
VILLERS STATION CEMETERY
Pas de Calais, France

If you go to that URL, there is a link to click to see a copy of the page in the Books of Remembrance where he is commemorated. The Books are kept in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill, and a page is turned each day.

You can also click for a plan of the cemetery where he is buried in France.

Your relations blew it, Janet!

They presumably missed the 1911 Cdn census.

Birth info isn't indexed and searchable in all provinces -- and in any event isn't available until 100 years later, as a general rule. So the births of any children they had here can't be found.

Some provinces release death info for more recent dates than others. Do you have any idea where they came to in Canada?

There are a slew of Cayleys, almost all Cdn born, in the 1911 census, but only 42 listings in the current phone book.

In all seriousness, you could mail out a form letter!

Searched for their passage here, just for info:

http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action

but they must have been sorely mistranscribed, as they don't appear from 1909 to 1913.
