Hi can anyone help with researching where my ggg/Granfather William Fitzgerald ,came from in Ireland. Birth year c 1799. Ireland M S.
In Newcastle upon Tyne in 1851 he is living with his wife Sarah and his daughter Ellen. He is stated to be a Chelsie Pensioner .
I do not know what the MS after Ireland might mean ?.
Unfortunately I do not know where in Ireland he came from.

MS often stands for Male Servant. You will need to find your Fitzgerald in a county first before you can get any real help from anybody. Fitzgerald is a common name all over Ireland and in every county. There are very few c on the IGI for Ireland and your best bet is the parish records now coming online for all the countes of Ireland. You can try the following site:

http://tipperarysouth.brsgenealogy.com/index.php?&set=yes

Once on to the site click map at the top to see which counties are now available. Remember that you also have to register to be able to use the site.

Be warned that you can browse each county for free, but there is no clue given as to whether or not you will have the correct one that you want until you have paid for the download, and each download will cost you 10 Euros or £7. !799 is further back than many Irish Parish Records go. Try to find other ways of identifying where in Ireland he may have come from. Some Census give more information than others and look at the original Census yourself, rather than rely on info given by anybody else which may just be the typed census extract rather than the original which often gives more information. Also if he was a chelsea Pensioner then his army details will give his exact place of birth so you need to find those from somewhere. TNA at Kew is the place for Army records. C 1799 he will be in the army and leaving army about 1840ish. They usually served 2 lots of 10 years. Sounds as though he could have joined just about in time for the Battle of Waterloo 1815. At 16 many joined army although should be 18. These early army records are not yet online so researching through Kew is your main hope.Try googling Battle of Waterloo to see if he was injured then
