Thanks - the problem I am having is John Stewart is such a common name - So may have to order several before I hit the right one!

I think the easiest avenue may be to get Maria's name through one of their children's Birth Cert. Mary Stewart is their eldest child - she was born roughly around 1867, I will give it a go.

You need to buy their marriage certificate. When was the oldest child born? You can buy one of the kids birth certs to find out the mothers maiden name and then you will be able to trace their marriage and buy that cert for both fathers names and occupations and then go backwards through the next generation.

Births, marriages and deaths can be looked up free on freebmd and using the reference you can buy the cert for £7 from GRO online.

I am trying to find information on John Stewart who was born around 1843 in Liverpool. He married a lady called Maria, but I am unsure of her surname. They had 9 children - Mary, James and Maria were also born in Liverpool, Winnie, Matilda, Margaret, Florrie, Johnny and Ruby were born in the Jarrow/South Shields area, so John and Maria moved up to Jarrow/South Shields somewhere approx between 1871/1873. His occupation was a rivetter.

I would love to go back further with the Stewarts and/or find out Maria's surname, so that I can go back further with her.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Many Thanks
