Stumped by name change

My great grandmother Anne Rogers changed her name to Davies along with her 3 sons Edwin Meredith, Mark and John Edward, between the 1861 (she states "unm") and 1871(she states "widow") census Llangollen (Froncysyllte /Trefor). I can find no marriage of Anne Rogers to a Mr Davies in that time frame. I can understand that perhaps she changed her name for respectability reasons as all 3 boys were born to her under her maiden name Rogers (which would be a bit silly considering that in a village everyone knew everyone's business). However what has me stumped completely is that her younger brother Kendrick Rogers also changed his name to Davies at the same time.
Somewhere along the way I was told there was a Rogers family (cousins) feud in Llangollen district over division of some land, but cannot confirm this.
Does anyone have any helpful suggestions as to how to proceed here.Thank you.
