I have been looking for some ancestors on the 1861 census and couldn't find them so I decided to look through the villages listed on Ancestry. I expected them to be in either East Ayton or West Ayton in Yorkshire. I still couldn't find them but I did notice that East Ayton began with a Susanna Wallis listed as Wife, and the first schedule number given is 49. This leads me to believe that there must be other pages before this that have been missed.

Please could someone take a look and tell me what they think. Or do you have the 1861 discs to check against?

Thanks
Jeanette x

Thanks Linda....you're a star!

They are Thomas Skelton c1836, Susannah Skelton born 1837 Ruston Parva, and they should have a son called James with them born 1860 in West Ayton.

Hi Jeanette, I notice that in 1871 there are 16 images whereas in 1861 there are only 9, so it is possible there are some images missing. I know there are some parts of the 1861 missing, but not sure where.

There a list of missing census pieces on Clive Buckle's website. I don't know if this will help as I'm not familiar with Yorkshire

I have looked through West Ayton on the discs. The schedule starts with household 1 continues until it clearly states the end of the village. Unfortunately they are not there.
I also looked through East Ayton, there is just one Skelton family there
Estill? Skelton 43 school master b East Ayton, with his wife Mary 33 and son in law Joseph Raine 4, both born West Ayton The ages are difficult as there are black lines through them

According to the 1871 census young James was born in West Ayton c1861, his baptism should be on the IGI in Hutton Buscel as the years needed are covered, but it isn't. The parents marriage isn't there either, yet again, the IGI does cover those years.
Maybe they married in Seamer parish as it does cover part of the area covering West Ayton. Unfortunately the IGI doesn't cover the years needed.
The 1861 census was taken on the 7th April, so maybe James had not been born then. Statitically he is more likely to have been born in the second half of 1860 and there is this birth registration which may be him, or not of course

Name: James Skelton
Year of Registration: 1860
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Scarborough
County: Yorkshire - East Riding, Yorkshire - North Riding, North Yorkshire
Volume: 9d
Page: _90

Sorry I can't help, but they are definitely not in West Ayton in 1861

Linda

Thanks ever so much for taking the time to look. I've just had a look on Genuki and it seems that the parish registers for Seamer are deposited at the East Riding Archives which is very handy for me! I'll have to have a look through them and see what I can find. If not, then it looks like a trip to York is on the cards!

Thanks once again
