Help with Portuguese records

My brother-in-law would like to find out about his father. My brother-in-law was born in May 1968 in South Africa to a South African mother who was not married to his biological father. His father was Fernando da/de Silva, a Portuguese man who worked for Chicago Bridge Company as a welder (possibly in the dry docks in Durban). Fernando was over in South Africa on a three year contract and then returned to Lisbon. He returned to SA to visit when my brother-in-law was about 9 months old, and then again when he was about two. Thereafter they lost contact. Fernando had a daughter who was born in about 1955, named Maria. Can anyone who has experience with Portuguese records suggest how to go about tracing Fernando da/de Silva?
Any help would be appreciated.
