Find Ancestors

I'm slightly stumped with finding a birth for Edith May Smith - my paternal grandmother. She died when my dad was 1 (1942) so I haven't got a lot to go on. I have her marriage cert. that gives the following details:

Age: 43 on her marriage cert. (7 Dec 1940)
Status: Spinster.
Father: John Smith, deceased, occupation, general labourer

I have found a John Smith with a daughter Edie on the 1901 census, but have been unable to locate her birth (around 1897/98).
