The William I want is the one from the 1861 census.
The one on the 1841 is 45 and not 15 when you look at the image.

So is his name on marriage cert...Thompson?
Do you know his mother's maiden name? There is a child William, born Salford, with grandparents JONES in Wales 1851 census.
But transcribed as William Jones.

No it's William Moss Thumpstone married to Mary Alice Forrest. His mother was Eliza Hayes who was married to Thomas Thumpstone.

I see your problem!!

What occupation is on marriage cert for Thomas? Also for William? Do you have the family of William and Mary Alice in 1901 or 1891?

I have not got the marriage cert here as i am doing this with a close friend and she has had to go home ill. We've both started with bad colds. She has not been able to find any other Thumpstones on any other census. Sorry I cann't be more helpful but appreciate all the time you are taking looking for us.

I'm sorry not to be able to help...I did find some 1851 census pages from Salford which were badly damaged and difficult to read..maybe your pages are missing...but that wouldn't account for the other census years. If William was a soldier or anything the family could be abroad..have you looked at overseas registrations?

Ancestry isn't coming up with many Thumpstones at all in any country. Have you tried to find any change of name deed polls?
Otherwise I give in I'm afraid. Sorry.

Hi Suzanne
Really appreciate all the time you have spent. This close friend had her tree but does not use a computer at all. we're oaps. When she saw what I had done with my tree and got the census images she was most impressed and ask could I just print out hers for her.Easier said than done. When Eliza daughter of William married Robert Craig I have them in 1891 and 1901 but cann't find anything for robert or Eliza before their marriage. I feel such a failure .I don't think they ever changed their name as Eliza was married as Eliza Thumpstone and as far as we know never moved from the Manchester area. Thank you again for all your time.
