Can anyone help with records for Calgary.I am looking for Edwin Fosten b 1901 in England.Arrived in Canada 1914 with parents. From info found so far it looks like he married a Lill Dunne about 1930 in Calgary area and had a daughter at the General Hospital October 1931.These details were found in Calgary Herald.
I am looking for the marriage date, death dates and name of daughter and any other siblings.
Any help gratefully received.

Ha. I know, that's not nice. But records for Alberta?

Actually, I'm being too harsh on Alberta. It does have a service for genealogical records -- it just doesn't have a searchable on-line database like some provinces do.

Fortunately for Canadians (in my own opinion), our personal information is protected for approximately our lifetimes. It is not the government's to give away. So you may be able to access some of the info you are interested in, but not some other info.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who can apply for a genealogical search?

Vital Statistics records are not public. The person applying for a genealogical search must show they are eligible (pdf) to apply for someone's birth, marriage, death or stillbirth documents. The only exceptions are:

* After 100 years has passed anyone can apply for any birth registration.
* After 75 years has passed anyone can apply for any marriage registration.
* After 50 years has passed anyone can apply for any death or stillbirth registration.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

You should be just under the wire for the marriage registration -- 1930 + 75 years.

For any birth after 1906, no luck. If any of your people died before 1956, you could access that info.

You've done well so far with the newspaper results.

Is FOSTEN actually the spelling of the name -- not Foster?

There are only 3 listings for that surname in total in Canada, all in the area Sudbury, Ontario, so obviously all related:

http://findaperson.canada411.ca/

One of them might be a duplicate: two people, same initials; the second might be a vacation property.

I do see an Edwin Fosten born 1901 in Wandsworth, so it looks like that's it. You might want to try contacting those three people!

Hi Kathryn,

Yes spelling is correct as FOSTEN.
I am in contact with the Fostens in Sudbury and Lively areas but they dont know anything further. There was a falling out many years ago and contact was lost with the family of Arthur,Ada and son Edwin.
You are right in that Edwin was born in Wandsworth in 1901.Interesting to see that Lillian Dunn was also born in England so I will have a look at records on Ancestry for her.How did you find that Edwin was born in Wandsworth?
Thanks for the info.

I found Edwin at Ancestry, but he should be at FreeBMD. Just search for that name at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

Oh, alright, here it is. ;)

Name: Edwin William S Fosten
Year of Registration: 1901
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Wandsworth
County: Greater London, London, Surrey
Volume: 1d
Page: 580

That's really the only birth for that name that I can see.

Per the 1911 census, the Dunns immigrated to Canada in 1910. This could be a possibility:

Marriages Dec 1900
Dunn John James Halifax 9a 789
Greenwood Ellen Halifax 9a 789
Holden Edith Halifax 9a 789
Tyler Frank Halifax 9a 789

You could try running a personal ad in the Calgary Herald ... and that's about all I can think of!

Oh, except that if you do apply for the Edwin Fosten marriage certificate, it should give you his wife's father's and possibly mother's names. (Old Ontario records do include both, plus, if you're lucky, age and place of birth.)
