Mary, I agree that it looks as if the family emigrated so I had a look at the 1901 Canadian census and also checked the Ellis Island site. Nothing.

Could you give me the info on the census for the mother-in-law. Perhaps that might lead to something.

I wonder if the family emigrated somewhere?

The only one that I can find is mother-in-law Ann Wilkinson, a pauper, in a workhouse, I believe.
She's age 75 but born same place as in 1891, Medley. (although it's been mistranscribed as Wedley)

I'm searching for Alfred Clayton and Ann Clayton (nee Wilkinson) and their children in the 1901 Census.

I have their marriage in 1887, Hull Yorkshire. I have found them in the 1891 Census, see below living with his mother-in-law Ann Wilkinson.
