Julie,

Have you found his prison record to know what the crime and sentence were?

Julie

Julie Report 17 Dec 2007 19:09

Diane

There is a prison in Brixton, but after just reading up on it i would say definitely yes to Wandsworth

Julie

I have one of mine in Wormwood Scrubs on the 1881

Claire,

I know, does make you think that there was a deterrent to crime back in those days!

Will let you all know what I find, when I find it.

Julie,

Do you know if Wandsworth would have been the closest prison to Deptford, or would it indicate a more serious crime to have been sent there?

Thanks for the address and numbers, I was hesitant about getting in touch with the prison as I thought they would just refer me to the LMA as the records are over 100 years old, and not even indexed. But as you've given me the address perhaps I should put pen to paper and invest in a stamp!

Many thanks

Julie

This is 100 years earlier but I thought you may like to see the punishments that were given out-

1795 Bodmin session William Launder of Redruth, tinner, and Richard Angove serious theft of tin stuff from Sir John St Aubyn - 2 years hard labour, public whipping till backs are bloody in Bodmin, at beginning and end of sentence.

Haven't times changed?

Claire..oh definitely, as he was 55 in the 1901 this must have been some crime, not a teenager pick-pocketing! I've noticed his wife changed her name in the 1901 census too... I feel some scandal coming on!!

Ah but Diane, isn't this more exciting than finding an Ag Lab!

Claire,

Thanks, have looked there, it seems the original records are at the London Metropolitan archives, but 1872-73 are online. I of course will be looking through 10 years ledgers of inmates, as I don't know when he was convicted between the 1891 census and the 1901 census... me thinks it might be a long day!

ooops I've found my first criminal in my tree! I have a man listed in the 1901 census in Wandsworth prison. I have tried google, but it doesn't appear I can find the archives easily, I know there was someone once looking for Warwick prison and those records were online, does anyone know what I can find on Wandsworth for 1901?

(ie is anyone any better at googling than me!?)
