"Have tried to trace his children but they can only be found in the same census and no others."

Well no -- I found Samuel and Joseph in 1871 and 1881 in an instant.

From the 1861, you have their names, their years of birth (1842 and 1844), their place of birth (Ireland), and their place of residence (Salford, Lancashire).

Search with those criteria, and up they pop, no problem.

I searched for the sons because there was a good chance the daughters had married in the interim.

Searching in 1871 for

Sarah (no surname)
in Salford
born 1837
in Ireland

there is a Sarah Bath, husband William.

Search for a marriage between Anderson and Bath, in Salford, between 1861 and 1871, at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

... and there isn't one. Which could be because the surname in 1871 (I checked the image) is actually Bush. No marriage for them, either -- and there are children in the household born before 1861, so that likely isn't our Sarah.

How about Sarah Connaughton? Well ... FreeBMD has:

Marriages Dec 1864
Anderson Sarah Ann Salford 8d 5[2_]

so then you have to look at that image, try to read the real page number, and search for marriages in that quarter and that volume, on that page number, in Salford, and check the 1871 census to see who that Sarah married and whether she's yours.

For Maryann, well, that name comes in many variations.

Searching in 1871 for

mary* (no surname)
in Salford
born 1831
in Ireland

there are several possibilities. You just have to play at FreeBMD and see whether you can figure out who the men in question married, to see whether one of those people is your Maryann.

No James or Isabelle, though.

If you search the death index, you'll find two Isabella Andersons who died in Salford in 1862 and 1863. One of them is very probably your Isabelle.

A James Anderson died in 1862 in Salford; again, very probably your James.

i can only find james in the 1816 census. Have tried to trace his children but they can only be found in the same census and no others. i have no idea what happened to james before or after 1861.

From the 1861, Isabelle was also born in Ireland:

Name: Isabelle Anderson
Age: 54
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1807
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: James
Gender: Female
Where born: Ireland

as was their oldest child in the household:

Name: Maryann Anderson
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: James
Mother's Name: Isabelle
Gender: Female
Where born: Ireland

so they must have married in Ireland as well.

Unfortunately, the youngest child in the household was also born in Ireland (assuming the correct info was given in the census):

Name: Joseph Anderson
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1844
Relation: Son
Father's Name: James
Mother's Name: Isabelle
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland

So you're not even going to be able to find a birth record in England that would show Isabelle's birth surname.

They don't seem to be in the 1851 census, so the move must have happened in the 1850s.

Sons Joseph and Samuel also report only "Ireland" for place of birth in 1871 and 1881, so unfortunately there's no way to narrow down their place of origin from the English records. And for Ireland, all I can say is: good luck!

You might ask at the Records Office board for some guidance; do mention the info from this thread, if you do.
