Hi Jeanette,

According to FreeBMD Minnie Bates married James Sadler in 1898 in Meriden, Warwickshire. I have found Minnie and James and baby Hataway James in the 1901 census living in Conventry, Warwickshire.

Thank you for your advice and help Jeanette. I feel that Florence is still partially missing until I have her birth cert. and one day I really hope to fill in the missing pieces of Florence's birth.

Hi Michelle

I can only suggest you buy the birth certificate mentioned in my previous reply. You can order this on line with the reference I have given. At least that would either confirm it or not. There seem to be enough coincidences to spend £7. However as mentioned before, it is unlikely that you will ever find out what her father's name was.

Did Minnie marry as I cannot find her as Minnie Bates on the 1901 census.

Thanks Jeanette.

It is possible that her middle name is "May" but it is not stated on the marriage certificate. Florence and Edward Tom had three boys. Two of the boys were born at 2 Vicarage Mansions, St Georges Road, Hastings so it may be a possibility that the Florence you stated above could be her. Is there a way I could find out if that is really her?

There is a Florence Elizabeth Bates whose birth was registered at Hastings j/f/m 1891 ref vol 2b page 16. Did she have a middle name?

Jeanette Report 18 Dec 2007 14:33

On 1901 census Florence Bates (adopted) aged 10 was living at 122 St Georges Road, Hastings with

Alfred Veness aged 56 a gas labourer
Caroline Veness aged 58.

This is a possibility as you state Florence was married in Hastings. However, as you assume she was born when her mother was young and unmarried, it is highly unlikely you will ever find the name of her father (we all have at least one of these in our trees). There are one or two possibilities for her birth registration. It could even be that as her mother was so young, she was sent away to have the baby so it won't necessarily be that she was born in Warwickshire.

Florence is my Great Grandmother. It was always known in the family she had a mother named Minnie Bates. In 1939 Florence purchased exclusive right to be buried on top of MInnie at Hastings Borough Cemetery.

You can't get her date of birth without buying her birth certificate. As for her father, its unlikely you'll find him. As there is no father named on her marriage certificate, the likelyhood is that she was illegitimate.

How do you know that Minnie was Florence's mother if you don't have her birth certificate?

Where was Minnie living in 1891?

If Florence is the one that died in Q1 of 1951, then her age is given as 60 making her birth year 1891. Maybe she wasn't born when the 1891 census was taken.

Sorry Sam, this is my first attempt. No I can't find her on a census yet. From the post I was hoping to get more details, like her date of birth, or possibly her fathers name, or even just where she was born. It seems that Minnie was very young when she had Florence. Is it possible that Florence was sent away after birth and lived with another family. According to the 1891 census Florence wasn't living with Minnie.

What are you trying to find - you say Florence Bates yet you know when and where she was born, who her mother was, who she married and when she died.

What else do you want, do you have her on the census?

I'm trying to find a Florence Bates born (c)1890. She had a mother named Minnie Bates. Minnie was born in Warwickshire 1878 as stated in her Birth Certificate. According to Florence's marriage certificate she married Edward Tom Morris 1913 in Hastings, Sussex. No father was listed for Florence. Minnie was listed as a witness to the marriage. Florence died 1951 in Hastings, Sussex. Can anyone please help? I'm at a loss.
