I wonder if anyone can check any census records for a James William Golding born 1874 in Manchester. He died in 1935 in Southport.

He married a Francis Sumner in the 1890's.

I just can't see any records for him. Maybe I need a fresh pair of eyes to have a look for me.

Many thanks

Simon.

There is no James William Golding birth registered in 1874, but there is this one registered in the first qtr. of 1875 (the birth could have been late 1874). However it is in London and not Manchester:-

James William Golding
March. qtr. 1875, St. Olave, 1d, 241.

Could he have been born London and then moved to Manchester at a young age so thought that was where he was born?

My grandfather always said he was born in County Durham (which is where he mostly lived) but he was actually born in London.

1901 - definitely not your man. He's a boarder not a daughter so these are not his parents. He's a tram conductor.

Looks like you'll have to get the marriage cert to find out who his father is.

Thanks Ozibird for trying.

I think the James Goulding you found who was born in 1871 just might be the one I am looking for.

I've just found out that his father was called Thomas Goulding, but don't know where he was born.

I think I might order the birth certificate after Christmas to see if he is definately the one I'm looking for.

Thanks again

Simon.

Simon Report 22 Dec 2007 00:05

I don't think its him Ozibird.

He was definitely was born in the 1870's
in the Manchester area.

In the 1901 census he is 27 years old, so that would put his birth year at 1874.

In the census they put his name down as Jas William Goulding, so I'm guessing that Jas was short for James in those days.

The strange thing is that I can't see him on the 1881 census.

So where did his father come from?

Thanks for the help Ozibird.

Much appreciated.

Simon.

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 22 Dec 2007 00:22

Yes Jas is an abbreviation for James, as is Thos for Thomas.
