I am trying to trace details of my GGG Grandmother, Margert Oiley and am having no luck. Here is what I know.

Margaret Oiley (c1817) married Thomas Hill in 1841, Stoke on Trent. Margaret's father was William Oiley, a clerk.

1851 Margaret died and then Thomas Hill went onto marry her sister (I assume she was anyway) Elizabeth Oiley (c1820) in 1858 at Wolstanton. Father again was William Oiley.

Neither of these certificates state that William was deceased.

- I can't find William on any census. There is a death for a William Oiley in Newcastle under Lyme 1844 but in that case, where is he on the 1841 census?

- Where is Elizabeth Oiley on 1841 / 1851 census? She died before the 1861 was taken so I have no idea where she was from.

- Searching surname Oiley in Staffordshire on Ancestry brings up Ann Oiley age 25 in 1841 census. Also the marriages of Elizabeth (1858), Margaret (1841), Mary Ann (1860 in Newcastle under Lyme) and Ann (1849 Wolstanton). Where are these ladies on the census? They may not be related but I can't find them to rule them out!

If anyone can find them on a census or anywhere else I will be impressed!

Thanks Glitter Baby, I will definately check both of those out. I'll try anything at the moment!

Alice, what are those you've listed? Are they census entries or deaths? I don't have find my past but if you could check a couple of those it would be good. If I can find out what type of entries they are, I can tell you which I think would be most useful to me.

Thanks to you both.

That's really wierd, Ancestry only have one Oiley in Staffs in 1841, that's Ann age 25! I didn't realise that different sites would have different census records.

I had a look on the BVRI discs but can't find anything helpful. All I can find is this which I presume you already have:

HILL, Thomas Marriage
Wife: Elizabeth OILEY
Marriage Date: 21 Nov 1858 Recorded in: Wolstanton, Staffordshire, England
Husband previously married
Husband's Father: Timothy HILL
Wife's Father: William OILEY
Source: FHL Film 1517618 Dates: 1849 - 1903 Note: Additional Data in Original Record

Thanks Margaret, yes I have the marriage certificate for that. Thomas, my GGG Grandfather, was previously married to Margaret Oiley who I'm assuming was Elizabeth's sister. I have loads for the Hill side of the family (that's my family name) but am coming unstuck with the Oiley's!

Thanks Alice, now I know what they are transcribed as on Ancestry I can take a closer look. That's the problem with Oiley, it could be transcribed as loads of things - I've now seen Riley, Giley, Coley, Ciley on various records and it's giving me a right headache!!
