Can anyone help me find my Granddads Army discharge?

His name was Robert McCorkell.

He was born in Londonderry, N Ireland in 1897 (although he told the army he was born in 1895).

He served in (and survived) WW1.

He died in Londonderry in circa 1975.

He was married to Harriet Platt.

When he enlisted his next of kin were his parents Robert and Ellen McCorkell.

I can't find anything regarding him enlisting or leaving the army, although I found the enlistment papers for his brother George.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!

Is it possible he was not injured and therefore not entitled to claim a pension? Reading the information, the records on Ancestry are only of those men who claimed a pension.

Ah ok, I didn't realise that.
No I don't think he was injured - never heard tell of it anyway.

As I said, I did find the enlistment papers for his brother - but darned if I can remember where lol

Thanks Keith.

Happy Christmas

Hi SH Rat,
Thanks.

I will look at that page in the morning.

I have checked his marriage cert and he was a Labourer by then - 1931.

So sometime between the end of WW1 and 1931 he left the army. ( He joined around 1913)

I know he was in Alexandria, Egypt and in India, because I have his photo album.

Thanks, bedtime for me!

His records may be at National Archives in Kew, if they survived - lots didn't! If he served after 1920 his records will still be with the Army.

SH Rat,

I got those records and worked out which was the correct man.
Unfortunately, it doesn't show where he served.

it does show:

Corp - Royal Inniskilling Fus - reg number 25538
- Royal Inniskilling Fus - reg number 15286
- C of Dragoons -reg number D/35974

Not sure what all that means!

And thanks to Keith and Ann!

Thanks,
Yes there is a number next to the Victory medal bit.

I know he had 2 medals because I've seen them, although unfortunately my Dads second wife biffed them along with his paybook when my Dad divorced her :(

The bit with 'Theatre of War first served in" and "Date of entry therein" is blank. No codes.

I'll go look at the page you recommended.

Thanks very much, it's appreciated!

SH Rat,
that's a great page!

I know he was a horseman during the war, so I'm hunting for info on that too.

Cheers

Well,
I hunted out my photos and I have some of him in Gibraltar in 1921 and 1922 and also in India Christmas day 1925, so he did serve for a good while after the war. I also have one where he's with his horse in Alexandria, but no date on that one.

That at least gives me something to work on!
