You have done well to get back this far, researching from NZ. If John owned the farm there should be wills. If he was a tenant there would have been leases but there is no central depository for these and they may not have survived. Elizabeth may have been born in Halberton but resident and attending church in East Ansey. She may have been a servant, quite possibly on the same farm as John. The date of the wedding, and John's age at the time, may give a clue as to whether he was a freeholder. |
