Does anyone have Sussex records please? My ancestor was a Romany lady named Matilda Elliott but I can only see her on a couple of census as a married woman, not before marriage. Many Romany folk were baptised, so Im hoping she was. She was born in 1843 in Copthorne, according to the 1871 and 81 census. Thanks for reading this. |

Hi, it was her maiden name. Her married name was Roberts. Unfortunately I know nothing else about her, although I have her husband's tree complete. |

Matilda is on the 1871 and 81 with her husband Samson Roberts and children, she died just after the census was taken, her death cert offers no clues. I haven't got her prior to 1881. Vera - that may be her birth, I dont know where it would have been reg'd. Ive scoured for marriages, but I dont think they had a traditional ceremony as its not on BMD. Yes, thats def them on the 1881 thanks Vera. The census said Copthorne, so the Hastings bit is probably wrong. |

Will do! Unless they're obviously Romany (like Romany names, or horse dealer for occupation) I wont know if its the right cert, unfortunately. |
